Re: [Xastir] online maps that work for me

2015-03-29 Thread kevin.paetzold

these three online maps from the xastir cvs install work for me:

osm_tiled_cycle
osm_tiled_mapnik
USridge

none of the others seem work.

I have a bunch of cloudmade (tiled) maps that I defined long ago. They
all still seem to work.

also the ridge radar geos available in
http://www.townisp.com/~k1kwp/NWS_Ridge_geos.tar.gz
all seem to work.

Kevin (K1KWP)

[Xastir] Online Maps selections needing attention before next release.

2014-06-10 Thread David A Aitcheson
Okay everyone; we have a release about to drop and we might as well FIX
SOME PROBLEMS that have languished way to long!

Specifically some of the online map .geo files that are built in to
the program that DO NOT work; such as:

Online/CanadaTopo250k (currently only a
placeholderfile in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps)
Online/CanadaTopo50k (currently only a
placeholderfile in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps)
Online/OSM_tiled_osmarender
Online/OSM_tiled_skiing
Online/OSM_tiled_topOSM_0_relief
Online/OSM_tiled_topOSM_1_contour
Online/OSM_tiled_topOSM_2_features
Online/TXRadar(points to
http://mesonet.tamu.edu which appears to be abandoned)
Online/USRadar (points to
http://mesonet.tamu.edu which appears to be abandoned)
Online/WMSRadar(points to
http://mesonet.tamu.edu which appears to be abandoned)
Online/terraserver-reflectivity(currently only a
placeholderfile in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps)
Online/terraserver-topo(currently only a placeholder
file in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps)
Online/terraserver-urban (currently only a placeholder
file in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps)
Online/terraserver (currently only a placeholder
file in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps)

I remember a discussion thread that some of the OSM_tiled_* are
possibly no longer available from a while ago; should we consider
dropping those map geo files from the source and thus clean up the
maps presentation view for newer and future users?

The same should be considered for all of the Placeholder .geo files
and the MesoNet related Radar.geo files in my opinion.

Others have proposed fixes to the missing radar screen availability that
do work and are acceptable IMO. In the case of Online/USRadar the patch
on SourceForge presented by Kevin Otte N8VNR (see
http://sourceforge.net/p/xastir/patches/3/) works 'FB' on V2.0.5 as does
a large group of files created/modified by Kevin W Paetzold K1KWP that
allows one to select any individual Radar site. I have lost track of
where I got those files for the moment but am still researching.

I agree - also the 4 non-tiled geo's starting with online_osm_cloudemade

been that way for quite a while now, so IMO they might as well be deleted.

On further investigation I agree with Lee K5DAT that the
OSM_cloudmade_*.geo files should also be removed.

Thus, I propose that if no objections are made or solutions are proposed
(other than the Radar solution that I propose below)in the next
approximate 24 hours _DEADLINE BEING 2359 UTC ON 11 JUNE 2014_ that the
following files be stricken from the Xastir CVS tree:

CanadaTopo250k.geo
CanadaTopo50k.geo
OSM_cloudmade_1.geo
OSM_cloudmade_2.geo
OSM_cloudmade_5.geo
OSM_cloudmade_998.geo
OSM_cloudmade_999.geo
OSM_tiled_osmarender.geo
OSM_tiled_skiing.geo
OSM_tiled_topOSM_0_relief.geo
OSM_tiled_topOSM_1_contour.geo
OSM_tiled_topOSM_2_features.geo
terraserver.geo
terraserver-reflectivity.geo
terraserver-topo.geo
terraserver-urban.geo
TXRadar.geo
USRadar.geo
WMSRadar.geo

This leaves us with just two items in the
/usr/local/share/xastir/maps/Online folder on a Linux system.

As a replacement for USRadar.geoI propose the following text for a file
called latest_radaronly.geo

#[latest_radaronly - fixed url from srh.noaa.gov to
radar.weather.gov by K1KWP - 2012-09-12]
#[latest_radaronly - produced from .gfw file by K1KWP - 2006-07-18]
#URL http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ridge/Conus/RadarImg/latest_radaronly.gif
URL http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/Conus/RadarImg/latest_radaronly.gif
TIEPOINT 0 0 -127.6204 50.4066
TIEPOINT 3400 1600 -66.5179 21.6525
IMAGESIZE 3400 1600
REFRESH 720

This geo file is just one of a much larger set of files that have been
created and updated by Kevin W Paetzold K1KWP.

I have this placed in my directory structure at
/usr/local/share/xastir/maps/ridge but it could just as well go in the
/usr/local/share/xastir/maps/Online folder.

Curt, I kindly request that you make these commits once the embargo has
passed and any other updates that Tom Russo has pending are applied
provided his updates are not going to be offset by the updates that I am
proposing.

That is all that I can think of at this time.

i have aprsg running on Ubuntu 14.04 .i have config it to do the

it takes messages from APRS-IS and TX to the local APRS repeater
the incoming Igate area is limited to 1300 kms so that i dont flood the

If you exit Xastir and then type (followed by a return)

As a minimum I'd suggest typing 'rehash' at the command prompt to force your

OS is Mepis No updates lately.

Haven't played with that variant so don't know if it auto-updates in the
background or not.

I typed curl (return) and it wants more info and directs me to check the
help file, same with wget.

That means to me that both programs are there and that the shell found them.
So an instance of Xastir launched from the same shell should find them also.

Rehash does nothing, command not found.

That just means you are using one of the less common variations of shells.
Most bash/tcsh type shells implement some sort of rehash command to rebuild
the list of known commands.

Moving up the list of drastic actions, I'd try logging out of the X session
and then logging back in. And if you are going to do that and/or are
considering a reboot then you might as well see what updates are available
and install them while you are at it.

You may also want to launch a web browser or other web based application and
make sure that you can browse the Internet. Even if email is working it is
possible that http type applications aren't working and that Xastir is
interpreting a failure by curl or wget as program not found.

I'm not sure what you mean. I use Mac OS, which is a variant of the popular
FreeBSD unix. I tried typing rehash on a command line and it didn't know what
I meant, and this is with bash. I did a 'man rehash' and got a very lengthy
description of builtin commands, which includes rehash, so it's odd that it
didn't work for me (unless I'm not using it right). So it's quite possible that
the other gentleman is having the same problem. It could very well be that it's
not as simple as just rehash ...

Ok. More info. I did some web browsing on this. BASH automatically rehashes
(recreate it's cache). No need to send the command (won't do anything anwyay)
if you're using a true bash shell.

'help hash' will bring up a usage page in bash. 'hash' by itself shows
the current cache entries and 'hash -r' clears the cache.

MacOS isn't really a FreeBSD variant. It's a hacked up Mach
microkernel with a 4.4 BSD server on top of it that Apple's tried to
make look as much like FreeBSD as possible. There's some code sharing
there, but the relationship to FreeBSD is shaky at best. For example,
the threading models are completely different because Mach has a
native idea of threads that is much different than FreeBSD.

rehash is a csh thing (which means tcsh too). Bourne and Korn shell
to my knowledge never had a cache that needed to be rebuilt.

Doesn't Xastir use libcurl instead of the curl command if it's been
compiled in? This would make the paths irrelevant.

Yes.

Also, is it that the configure command is not finding libcurl? In
that case you need to install the development package for curl as
well and re-run configure. I didn't pick up on whether you were
compiling Xastir from sources.
