Re: Open Xcode and agree to the license agreement

2016-07-03 Thread Kiran B
Hello Alex,

Is the Xcode installed in '/Applications' folder?

We did encounter issues that matched your description when we installed Xcode
on a secondary volume. Moving the Xcode app to the systems Applications folder
solved those.

Regards,
Kiran

Re: Open Xcode and agree to the license agreement

2016-07-02 Thread Alex Zavatone
The saga, the saga continues…

Sweet mother of unbelievably terrible application design.

I spent the time to set up a fresh install of 10.11.5 on a brand new drive and
a fresh install of Xcode 7.3.1 and a fresh install of OS X Server 5.1.5

Launched Server.

Same issue.

I had the console up and saw the message in the console to enter this command:

sudo xcodebuild -license

That allowed Server to start configuring Xcode.

I OK all the alerts and dialogs and then, OS X Server reports this:

Xcode Server setup failed

An Unexpected Error Occurred.

An nothing else. That's it.

BUT, it shows that Xcode server is on. So, I then it off and then turn it on
again. It asks me to select Xcode again.

WTF, APPLE? Does ANYONE test this software?

Does anyone in the company install it?

This is a fresh install - FROM THE APP STORE of OS X El Capitan 10.11.5, OS X
Server 5.1.5, and Xcode 7.3.1 on a BRAND NEW SSD I bought yesterday.

This is day 2 of trying to install and use this software.

So, I try this three more times.

Two more cases of "Xcode Server setup failed"

And then magically, on the third try, it starts working.

No explanation what failed previously, or why setup completed this third time.

I'm rebooting and retesting to make sure that this change has stuck and that
this is indeed a working Xcode build server.

It's unbelievable that this is considered professional grade software for one
of the biggest companies in the industry.

Trying to use OS X Server is just a horrid experience - and I already have a
working version that I set up 6 months ago in my old office. This process
should not suck this badly, but it does.

We'll see if Fastlane is a better or worse solution for CI and delivery when I
evaluate it.

Did you launch Xcode outside of server first? I’ve had similar “Accept License
Agreement” messages in the past and have gotten past that step by stopping
whatever it was I was trying to do and instead launch Xcode. After answering
any questions I sometimes opened preferences and made sure any Components I
need were downloaded and that the appropriate command line tool version was
set. Finally I quit Xcode and went back to whatever it was I was trying to do
in the first place.

However, my particulars never involved server.

Sorry, I detailed what worked to solve this in one of my replies, but what I
didn't make clear was that "on a brand new machine I have never used before
that I took out of storage, I installed Xcode 7.3.1 last night from the DMG."

This issue did not happen on a Mac that I have been working on for a while.

The big issue is that IF the user gets into this condition. Server opens up
Xcode's About page, which it apparently expects has a button on it to allow the
user to accept the license agreement.

It does not.

In any case, this is the terminal command that I entered that worked to solve
the issue.

sudo /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode

But wait, there's more…

Now, here we run into something interesting. The Mac I installed this on
hasn't had Xcode or 10.11.5 on it before, but I am making an install that I can
hopefully clone and ship to my office where our server should sit.

I don't know if the hard drive I used to house the OS and Xcode has ever had
Xcode on it before.

That said, the problem remains that when OS X Server asks the user to open
Xcode and agree to the license agreement, and it opens the Xcode About page, -
there is no place to accept the license agreement.

As far as I know, there is no place within Xcode where we can do that, let
alone in the About page, which OS X Server directs the user to.

Thank you, Jens.

Re-installing Xcode won’t change anything because Xcode.app and its contents
are *immutable*, just like any other app.

The state of the license agreement is stored somewhere else on disk, either in
~/Library or in some shared location like /Library; I don’t know where.

Nope. Didn't happen. That's what I'm saying.

I did a fresh install from the DMG last night.

There was nothing that popped up and asked me to agree to a a license.

But, if there were, we are now in a state where Server opens the About page in
Xcode where you can not agree to the license agreement.

Yeah, and as I stated, after we waste an hour figuring out what is wrong and
getting it to work, we don't have another 15 minutes to properly write up a bug
on this.

Hopefully, since I have a half day today, I'll have time to put a few reports
in, but honestly, that's why Apple pays their QA team.

Thank you for the reminder, Jens. I'll get to it.
