I'm can't test this behaviour on any other file manager right now. Can you try
this behaviour on other full-blown file manager like Nautilus(on Ubuntu) or
Dolphin? If they doesn't share this behaviour than changing it on Thunar may
not create big problem but yes it's better be on the safe side. Hoping you can
investigate and act on this issue soon :-)

Build instructions for reproducibility and other testers:

1. The repo doesn't have build instructions. I found a build command in the
thunar-git AUR package: ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc   
 --libexecdir=/usr/lib --localstatedir=/var --disable-static
--enable-gio-unix --enable-dbus --enable-startup-notification
--enable-gudev --enable-exif --enable-pcre --enable-gtk-doc
--disable-debug
1. libxfce4ui-2 needs to be at least version 4.13.2 to build master.
1. There is no 1.6.15 tag on master. Found "thunar-1.6.15" it on the xfce-4.12
branch.

The request to add an Undo option to bulk renamer is not acceptable because
it's beyond the plugin responsibility to keep track of the file names.
However, requesting Thunar itself to allow undo file operations (rename, copy,
move...) make much more sense.

I was able to track this issue down to this chunk of code:

So, the problem is that Thunar checks if the source file is owned by the
current user, which is not the case when mounted via [sudo] mount or fstab,
files will belong to root.

That was explicitly introduced by Thunar's original author long ago:

I can easily remove this part of the validation (and it works as expected),
however I'm not sure what are the implications and this is a safe change.

Revisiting this bug, to my surprise I can't reproduce the previous behavior.
It's not as nice as Nemo and Nautilus that limit filenames to 3 lines and
expose them on selection, but it's not too bad either as before. Probably gtk
or pango have changed since then.
I can't say this is a regression anymore, although there's room for
improvement.
