radeon power management patches

2003-11-17 Thread Alex Deucher
The patch available below adds dynamic power management support
(dynamic clock scaling) to the radeon driver. It is based on code I've
been testing from Hui Yu. It seems to work fine in basic testing on my
m6 and the 9200 in my desktop. More testing would be much appreciated
(especially mobility and IGP chips).

Binaries and diff (against xfree86 cvs) available here:
http://www.botchco.com/alex/radeon/dynamicPM/hy0/

Use:
Option DynamicPM true
to test it.

Let me know if you have any issues. Please look for updates and report
bugs here:

Thanks,

Alex

[I18n] UTF8 related font selection is broken multibyte encoding disagreement with libc

2003-11-17 Thread Tuomo Valkonen
I filed the following bug report at bugs.xfree86.org and was instructed
to discuss it here. My application (the Ion window manager) currently can
be compiled to use utf8 internally, but the Xutf8 routines are so broken
that I've been experimenting with just using generic multibyte encodings
(and perhaps later wchar_t for the few strings processing tasks, which
are why I chose the utf8 route in the first place), and the Xmb routines.
But they don't seem to work any better!

http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=877

--snip--

Problem 1

Font selection (from a fontset) in the Xutf8* string drawing routines does
not work in a sane manner in any locale and neither does font selection
in the Xmb/Wc* drawing routines in an UTF8 locale. Moreover, the Xmb
and Xutf8 routines do not select fonts consistently in an UTF8 locale.

Example 1. LC_CTYPE=fi_FI.UTF-8, user wants the base font to be
-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1. The same
font _but with iso10646-1 encoding_ among some others fonts gets loaded
(XCreateFontSet), guessed with the code available e.g. at
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/intro-i18n/ch-examples.en.html#s13.4.
(XCreateFontSet fails if only the user specified pattern is passed.)

The Xmb routines never use any other fonts but the iso10646-1 helvetica
that does not contain all characters, because fonts are selected based on
first matching character set and iso10646 seems to be preferred.

Studying the Xlib source code, apparnetly Xmb in UTF8 locale selects fonts
by the order of fonts in the fontset, that does not match the order of
fonts in the request pattern to XCreateFontSet. Shouldn't the pattern
matter? Shouldn't the glyphs actually implemented in a font matter, in
particular in case of iso10646 fonts?

Example 2. Same as above, Xutf8 routines. These routines seem to prefer
iso8859-1 encoding and indeed a fixed-width font with that encoding is
in the fontset. But the user wanted helvetica!

It seems Xutf8 routines select fonts from the fontset by a fixed list of
encodings, filtered by the locale. Again, font select based on character
set guess is wrong.

Example 3. Same as above, remove iso10646-1 helvetica from system.
Situtation is reversed. Xmb routines use a fixed-width font, Xutf8
routines helvetica.

Problem 2

All the drawing routines also have the problem of stopping processing the
string when an encoding is selected for which there is no font in the
fontset, even if some font with other encoding might implement the wanted
glyph. Once again, font selection should be based on the available fonts,
not the first matching encoding and there's no need to skip the rest of
the string even if a font can't be found.

Problem 3

This is unrelated to the above two problems, may not necessarily be a bug
in Xlib and I can only say of the situation under Debian/unstable, gnu libc
5.4.46. The problem is that if there are multiple encodings listed for
otherwise the same locale in /etc/locale.gen and locale-gen has been used
to generate whatever it does, libc mb routines always use the last encoding
listed in that file while Xlib mb routines respect the LC_CTYPE setting.
XSupportsLocale succeeds. While libc may not do the right thing here, it
sets the environment and nl_langinfo(CODESET) can be used to obtain the
encoding expected by the libc mb routines.

Re: [XFree86] interface bindings of x-server

2003-11-17 Thread devzero
Hi !

You can get similar effects via the above mentioned -nolisten/ssh combo,
mhhh - generally (especially on unix) this should work - BUT:
e.g. i often use cygwin xfree86 and putty on a windoze box. how can i tell putty to
use the
socket, cygwin xfree86 creates ? i think putty isn`t unix domain socket aware -
isn`t it ?
should i really blame putty now? ;)

BTW: this issue came to my mind because while evaluating NX from nomachine on my
home-pc, my kerio firewall popped up and told me: hey, someone trying to connect to
port 6000 from the internet (no - not the NX server - just an IP originating from
rr.com). since i used secure options inside NX-Client i wondered: why is Xwin.exe
(the cygwin port of xfree86, which comes with nx-client) bound to 0.0.0.0:6000 at all?
all other processes of nx are bound to localhost only - and since NX does some sort of
tunneling, binding of xwin.exe to localhost would be sufficient. so i searched for
an option, but didn`t find. ok - i didn`t discuss this with the nomachine people yet
- maybe -nolisten tcp is an option there, because their customized ssh-client is
cygwin based, too.

or with a firewall, so it's not been high enough priority for anyone to
mhh - from the point of view of an security aware sysadmin: a port, which isn`t
listening and reachable from the internet doesn`t need to be protected by a firewall.
every (unnecessary) listening port to the outside world is one port too much -
regardless if you have a firewall or not.

write the code to do that. (I did actually put code like this in xdm for
controlling which interfaces to listen on for XDMCP connections
when I was doing the IPv6 work, but that only deals with XDMCP protocol
connections, not the X protocol itself.)
thats fine regarding xdm - but i really would love to see it in Xserver too ;)

Also, most of the apps that support this are designed to run on machines
that connect to both internal and external networks, and those machines
 often don't run X.
mhh - i think being able to specify the interface is just a matter of good design of
network server apps in general, IMHO.
I have had several multi-interface issues with all sorts of server-apps where i just
banged my head against the wall, because of the programmer of that app didn`t keep in
mind, that his app could be used in multi-interface scenarios or being used by
security aware persons. (maybe it`s mostly just by the fact, that a programmer has a
very different philosophy regarding this or because he just isn`t aware, that there
are multi homed hosts or security aware persons in the real world). this fact really
gave me headache several times in my admin life and led me to my personal conclusion:
network server application? yes - but PLEASE let me configure the interfaces bindings
! :)

regards
roland

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
You can use the '-nolisten tcp' option suppress listening on tcp
completely in your case.

ok - thanks - but how should anything connect then to a listening socket, if it
 isn`t able to talk
to the xserver via bsd socket or whatever other method(i don`t know)?

-nolisten tcp only disables tcp sockets - you can still connect to :0
using the Unix domain socket, and then let ssh forwarding take care of
all remote connections.

i`m system administrator and most well designed server-apps support a configure
option to bind to specific interfaces. apache, mysql, samba - i can let them all run
on specific interface:port . so should X, IMHO
if this feature isn`t already inside X - hasn`t this been a feature request
 already?
i think, it`s an essential feature!

Re: [XFree86] S3 driver bug

2003-11-17 Thread Keith Tang
Klaus,

My system has the same card (S3 Trio 64) and it has the same problem with
XFree 4.2.0 when Mandrake 8.2 was installed. After verifying it wasn't
something which was messed up in my application, I installed XFree 3.3.6
and the problem was not present.

The problem occurs with the XDrawLine call. In general, the longer the line
segment, the worst the error. It appears like the second xy point in the
call is getting corrupted.

I wrote a small xforms application which demonstrated the problem and sent
it to the list, but did not see any response. I assumed I was the only one
who had experienced a problem.

 Hello XFree team,

 I have a problem with the S3 driver in XFree86 4.3.0 which
was not present in XFree86 3.3.3.
 I have installed an S3 Trio 64 card and I am running SuSE-Linux 8.2.
The S3 driver does not seem to draw sloping lines correctly.
It seems that lines start at the correct position but get drawn
 into the wrong direction.

[XFree86] Using X remotely

2003-11-17 Thread Scharf Yuval
Hello,

At home I have an ADSL connection (750 kbps / 96kbps)
My university has a very good connection.

If I try to use a graphical application remotely it runs very slow.
It takes dozens of seconds to start and everything take lots of time.

Can I expect to get a reasonable graphical connection in this setting?

Can I do something (install something or change the configuration) in
either of the sides to improve the situation?

Thanks,

Check out VNC, and particularly TightVNC, www.tightvnc.com. Note that
this will require your having administrative permission to replace the
X server on your workstation (or add a second one).

I've run VNC over a 56K wireless link; it's not *too* horrible.

[XFree86] Interesting scanpci question

2003-11-17 Thread Charles Lujan
Running XFree86 4.3 on a powepc-based IBM p615 RISC. I recompiled from
source, and am now trying to start X. I've configured the XF86Config to
look at my card, which is a Matrox G400 AGP. /proc/pci shows the card
at 'Bus 290, device 0, function 0. I changed XF86Config to use the
BusID PCI:122:0:0 but I still get the message No devices detected.

Is there a limitation in scanpci that won't allow detection of cards above
Bus id 255?How do I fake out scanpci to think it sees the card?

Re: [XFree86] Using X remotely

2003-11-17 Thread devzero
hi !
you can and you SHOULD use ssh for that purpose.
it gives you
- security
- performance gain because of optional compression of the datastream

read the ssh documentation and watch out for X11 tunneling and compression
options of ssh. If you are windows user, then i would recommend using putty - it`s a
free ssh client for windows.

since X over wan-link generally _is_ sluggish (latency problems) i would recommend
using Nomachine NX (www.nomachine.com) - it`s being created just because of that
reason.
another solution to adress the latency and bandwidth problem: give vnc (e.g. tightvnc)
a try.

I am trying to use a trident 9685 with a tv-out
port with a 5.6" TFT Lcd screen (analog, plugged with an RCA cable). The video
card has a jumper where i can set if it will boot on the vga port or on the tv
port. I configured xfree and using the vga port with a 15" monitor, i can use
xfree fine at 640x480. Then i changed the jumper and tryed to use the tv port.
On the linux console everything works perfectly, but when i issue an startx, the
image apears on the lcd screen, but i have a lot of interference, the image
keeps going down every time. I think this is a modeline issue, but how can i set
this thing to work? Someone can give me some help? I donĀ“t want to use windows
on this machine at all. Tanks very much for the help.

You need to send the whole log file, and your config file. Then folks might
have a prayer of helping you.

[XFree86] radeon power management patches

2003-11-17 Thread Alex Deucher
The patch available below adds dynamic power management support
(dynamic clock scaling) to the radeon driver. It is based on code I've
been testing from Hui Yu. It seems to work fine in basic testing on my
m6 and the 9200 in my desktop. More testing would be much appreciated
(especially mobility and IGP chips).

Binaries and diff (against xfree86 cvs) available here:
http://www.botchco.com/alex/radeon/dynamicPM/hy0/

Use:
Option DynamicPM true
to test it.

Let me know if you have any issues. Please look for updates and report
bugs here:
http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=96

Thanks,

Alex
