i've asked this before, but here's more data, so perhaps some can
explain what's going on!
when the wacom driver is in use, the external mouse is ignored. if the
driver isn't in the server layout, the external mouse works just fine.
i have tried every permutation involving all the Core

i've had good luck with both xkbd and xscribble (using waimea, no less).
