Re: Attach a file?

Oh, one other thing. If the email with your registration code or file
lists an URL where you can automatically retrieve the file if it's
lost, that's another good thing to put in your Yojimbo note.

Re: Attach a file?

2008-01-27 Thread TjL
I realize some folks might resent a suggestion of a non-Yojimbo answer
for this but I offer it only because it has been such a help to me.

Yes, I too would like some increased flexibility for licenses, as I've
gotten not just files, but now an image file (1Password).

Before I used Yojimbo for this I had another way of keeping track of
them. I created an email account (IMAP) and whenever I got a new
license code, I forwarded the message to that email address. When I
was setting up a new computer or hard drive or whatever, I could
easily get the codes via webmail or by pointing my mail client at the
IMAP account. Since it was IMAP (not POP3) I didn't worry about the
messages getting removed from the server.

Now I have a GMail account and have a special label I use for
registration codes.

This was especially handy when I was reinstalling software and tried
to launch Yojimbo only to be told that my Yojimbo demo had expired --
so I couldn't get my Yojimbo license code out of my Yojimbo database.

For what it's worth, I find that a little effort on the front end
(label it / forward it AND add it to Yojimbo) helps a lot.

Now that some of them are files instead of codes, I add a Serial
Number in Yojimbo which says "See GMail"

Oh, and just for completeness, I keep those license-code-files in
"~/Documents/License Codes/" which is backed up to iDisk :-)

Very well said, David. I think I'll start adopting the same
practice, as I despise these "license files".

I do much as you do in Yojimbo when I have one. I also keep my serial
numbers and passwords in text files as opposed to the built-in forms.

Meanwhile, I do have three programs that utilize only this unfortunate
method of serialization. I've created a folder where I keep these
files and in Yojimbo, I create a serial number item as usual, and then
remind myself that the serial is a file in the folder. Since I
use .Mac I keep a copy of the serial files there too.

It isn't a satisfactory solution and if Yojimbo is to continue to be a
viable serial keeper, perhaps a new feature is needed.

first to rail on against "feature creep" in Yojimbo--much of its
beauty in its simplicity. To that end, does anyone have a more
elegant solution than the one I'm using?

Thank you.

Re: Attach a file?

2008-01-26 Thread Rhet Turnbull
I store my serial numbers (and everything else except web archives) in
text notes because I find Yojimbo's force-fed record types too
constricting as this case highlights. I also store passwords in
encrypted text notes even though this adds a layer of annoyance
because Yojimbo doesn't encrypt the comments section of a password
record and these days passwords often have other sensitive data
associated with them. For example, I find that the annoying "secret
question" password retrieval hints need to be recorded because I can't
remember the answers to the silly questions. So I store those in
Yojimbo but I don't want them stored unencrypted in the comments
section.

So I store everything in a text note and use collections to organize them.

Unfortunately, dropping the file into the notes section of a Serial
Number record results in copying the file path, not a copy of the
file. I'll have to give some thought as to whether or not I want any
software license info stored as a text file--it's something that I'd
have to keep my head wrapped around. Thank you for the suggestion
though!

Re: Attach a file?

2008-01-26 Thread Rhet Turnbull
I've got the same issue and have also wished that Yj had better
support for file attachments. This is do-able with a text note in Yj
however. What I do is to attach the file (via drag and drop) into a
text note. It will show up as an icon in the Yj note. However, you
can't ctrl-click on it for a context menu to save-as as I would expect
or do anything else with the icon; it also doesn't show the name, just
the icon. To get it back out of Yj, just drag the icon out of the
text note onto the desktop or other folder and the file will be
re-created.
Cheers,
Rhet
