[Zappa-List] ZPZ in Tel Aviv!!!

2010-07-16 Thread Eli Marcus
The ZPZ show just conquered Tel Aviv 2 nights ago!
On Wednesday night, 14 July, at 10:00 PM local time.
ZPZ gave a 2 1/2 hour show with no intermission
the band was great, the show was great!
vocalist Ben Thomas seems to have done his homework/research before
going on stage,
as he managed to add-lib a whole list of local references into the songs,
including the names of a fashionable local restaurant or two...

[Zappa-List] Re: Weird Frank Merchandise

2008-12-13 Thread Eli Marcus
I remember the Phi Zappa Krappa photo being featured in a large format
high quality art magazine called Avant Garde in 1969

here is more info from the Kill Ugly Radio site:

  The Toilet Poster

  From Zappa Wiki Jawaka

An enduring image of Frank Zappa
http://wiki.killuglyradio.com/wiki/Frank_Zappa is the Toilet Poster
or Phi Zappa Krappa-poster, depicting him sitting on a toilet. The
picture was taken by Robert Davidson in 1967 for an article in the
International Times (Issue 18, August 31st - September 13th). There are
three versions extant, all taken during the one session. The original
version (1) has Jugendstil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jugendstil
style graphic ornaments around the picture. The Krappa version (2) has
colored ornament and the name ZAPPA as ornament or has the text PHI
ZAPPA KRAPPA across the top of the poster but with no ornamentation.

Zappa resented that he had no control, or royalty payments, from the
poster although he authorised one version:

I asked him whether the original Phi Zappa Crappa posters received
his authorization.

Yeah, he says almost regretfully. If it says 'Phi Zappa Crappa'
it was one of the authorized ones. But by that time there were maybe
ten other versions of the toilet poster out, from different sources
that weren't authorized.

-What's A Mother To Do?
http://wiki.killuglyradio.com/wiki/What%27s_A_Mother_To_Do%3F

It was designed to be a picture to go with an article in the
International Times
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Times, you know about
that magazine from England? And it was supposed to be used as
publicity for our first concert in 1967. And the photographer who
took it made a poster and sold it for his own profit and then that
poster was bootlegged all over Europe and eventually went into the
United States and millions of 'em were sold. But I couldn't stop
them from doing that. No! Because in London, er, the, photographic
copyright laws are different from the United States. Somebody takes
a picture in the US, they can't make commercial use out of it
without your permission but in England, if somebody takes your
picture, the photographer owns it and can do whatever he wants with it.

I'm pretty sure the toilet picture - Phi Zappa Krappa, I believe it was
often called - was a bootlegged thing, and never an official Zappa shot.

[Zappa-List] re: cleverest Zappa song

2008-07-04 Thread Eli Marcus
Of course, Frank was such a sharp wit, a genius both with music and with
words,
and all of You Are What You Is has great dialog, and there are certainly
many classic verses that we have all memorized from Joe's Garage and
Sheik Yerbuti
but when it comes to something that gets you in your mind and in your
gut (laughing that is),
I think my all time favorite cleaver Zappa song would be Cosmik Debris

The mystery man came over
And he said Im outta sight!
He said for a nominal service charge
I could reach nirvana tonight
If I was ready, willing and able
To pay him his regular fee
He would drop all the rest of
His pressing affairs and devote
His attention to me

But I said look here brother
Who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Look here brother, dont waste your time on me

The mystery man got nervous
And he fidget around a bit
He reached in the pocket of his mystery robe
And he whipped out a shaving kit
Now I thought it was a razor
And a can of foaming goo
But he told me right then when the top popped open
There was nothin his box wont do
With the oil of aphrodite, and the dust of the grand wazoo
He said you might not believe this, little fella
But itll cure your asthma too

And I said look here brother
Who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now what kind of a guru are you, anyway?
Look here brother, dont waste your time on me
(dont waste your time)

Ive got troubles of my own, I said
And you cant help me out
So, take your meditations and your preparations
And ram it up your snout!
But I got the crystal ball, he said
And held it to the ligh
So I snatched it, all away from him
And I showed him how to do it right

I wrapped a newspaper round my head
So I looked like I was deep
I said some mumbo-jumbo, then
I told him he was going to sleep
I robbed his rings and pocketwatch
And everything else I found
I had that sucker hypnotized
He couldnt even make a sound
I proceeded to tell him his future, then
As long as he was hanging around
I said the price of meat has just gone up
And your old lady has just gone down!

And I said look here brother-who you
Jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now is that a real poncho or is that a sears poncho?
Dont you know, you could make more money as a butcher?
So, dont waste your time on me
Dont waste it, dont waste your time on me
(shanti)

[Zappa-List] Re: Zappa Beer

2008-02-12 Thread Eli Marcus
I don't think that a boutique brewery which puts out a limited edition
beer in honor of FZ
can really qualify as a commercialized memorabilia product of a
celebrity figure,
it certainly is not going to show up at a Toys R Us or Wall Mart store,
nor is
it going to be available through Amazon.com
I believe that it is just a sweet tribute to someone that the brewery
owner really admires
I sure would love to have a bottle...

as far as the action figure dolls go - I have never in my life purchased
memorabilia products for my music heroes other than T-shirts,
but - I'd definitely buy a Phi Zappa Crappa doll of FZ sitting on the
toilet all NEKKID just like the old poster from way back when!!!

[Zappa-List] Re: Nappy's Fate?

2008-01-16 Thread Eli Marcus
Hey,
I've been a sworn Zappa fan for 35 years, and I hadn't heard the term
Nappy 'till now,
I only figured out from the context of the first two messages in the
thread that it was Napolean Murphy Brock...

I ordered tickets online months in advance, and traveled half way around
the world to see the ZPZ show in Toronto,
and I really was hoping and praying that Napolean would be the guest star,
I certainly enjoyed Ray White immensely, and even shook his hand as he
was heading off stage at the end,
but if Napolean were there, it would have been more of a legendary
experience for me
