Why not just do simple mirrored vdevs? or use cheaper 1tb
While it is true that you can not add a single device to a raidz vdev, you
can easily add more vdevs, and this is by far the best way to grow because
each vdev adds much speed to the array. Raidz is more advanced than raid5,
the fact that your card doesn't do the raid calculations is not a

not to use ide, i'm just saying you might have to research your cf cards if
you do. not all ide-cf will boot.

From what i understand, and from everything i've read by following threads
here, there are ways to do it but there is not a standardized tool yet, and
it's complicated and on a per-case basis but people who pay for support have
recovered pools.
i'm sure they are working on it, and i would imagine
i think you need to give more information about your setup

then you'll be golden there.

I've been running ZFS on FreeBSD and i've had no problems. ZFS is still
considered experimental in FreeBSD but it's working wonderfully. I have 3
raidz1 vdevs with 4 1tb drives each and i've had several power outages and
i've yanked out disks just to see what would happenit's been fine. I
I don't have an answer to your question exactly because i'm a noob and i'm
not using mac but i can say that on FreeBSD which i'm using atm there is a
method to name devices ahead of time so if the drive letters change you
avoid this exact problem. I'm sure opensolaris and mac have something
sometimes the disk will be busy just from being in the directory or if
something is trying to connect to it.
Again, i'm no expert so i'm going to refrain from commenting on your issue
further.
