A similar thought / request occurred to me recently. I was working on an
article which referenced a previous article, and I needed a way to reference
the old article while writing the new one. Really wished for a way to open
both simultaneously.
Personally, I was kind of wishing for a "split win

Jaap,
I agree with everything you wrote, and in fact, just had an alternate idea
that would (potentially) simplify the idea... What about using a Tabbed
interface instead? The Tabs could replace the path bar (ie, be a different
option for the path bar). The ideas would be:
• A new "Tabs" menu

And, in fact, the original request was for a way to view 2 or more documents
simultaneously.
I was thinking that my need was really only for a way to be able to quickly
flip between documents, not that I needed to really have them
side-by-side... That's why I went to a tabbed interface.

George, I think the path bar works as tabs. You can click on it to show the
page, and navigate pages using same shortcuts with nautilus. Ex) Alt+Left,
Alt+Right, etc. I prefer the path bar than tabs.
Separatable windows are differnent things. You can place many pieces at your
desktop, as you can d
No, the pathbar isn't the same...it's a path or a history, not *specific*
documents that you want open.
The only way to get the kind of ability I want is to have the Index open,
but I don't really want that much screen used, nor do I want to navigate a
whole outline to switch between documents.

Sorry, my message was chopped off in the middle.
I can see it as being useful to have more than one pages open at the same
time : to compare them, to copy and paste between them or to have different
pages in different Linux workspaces. This requires, especially the latter,
separate windows.
