Re: [ZION] strengthening new converts
Heidi, I think the best thing that can happen to a new convert is for them to be given a job in the ward/branch. The more they are completely IMMERSED in the activities and goings-on of the ward, the more they'll become and feel a part of the ward and thus the church as a whole. I've seen way too many new converts lose interest and fall away because they didn't lose themselves in the work. Someone once defined love as 'the things two people go through together'. Using this definition, we must experience good and bad and inbetween WITH another person and as we do, we will learn to know and love that person. I feel very strongly that we NEED to have regular (quarterly or even more often) ward activities so our ward members can get to know each other. We need to interact with each other, rub shoulders, share stories and experiences with each other. We need to sit in a classroom tegether and be taught and learn the gospel together. As we do, whether as a teacher or as a student, we will begin to know each other. Then we'll begin to love that person. The same applies as a group. The more you get to know the members of a group, the more you develop a love for them. Thus, the best thing I've ever done to strengthen a convert was to help them get settled into a new calling in the ward and then encourage their attendance at activities and church meetings. Be there for them, be an example of good and righteous living for them, and love them. They'll love you back I promise. Re: [ZION] strengthening new converts
For us, it was the constant attention. Almost every day and night, we had someone from the ward dropping by, helping us get acclimated to the new lifestyle, explaining the new jargon. It was the friends who decided to pick up our oldest daughter every morning at 5:30 for early morning seminary (and explained to us what seminary was). And it was a clever Relief Society president and an inspired bishop who made sure we each had rewarding callings which were more than just "busy" work, and which helped us learn about the "inner workings" (heh!) of the church. *jeep! ~~Chet "If ya thinks ya is right, ya deserfs credit - even if ya is wrong."
