Excellent! The world needs more of those. At some point it would be
interesting if they interoperated. For example, real libraries
regularly exchange catalog records. That is one area where all such
sites could collaborate for the benefit of all.

On the other hand, the Kirbi system wants to focus on book lending,
which is a feature that many book recomendation sites either don't
have or have in a very limited way. To me, it is a crucial aspect.

In a developing country like Brazil, where a Java book can cost 10% of
a programmers starting sallary and public libraries are scarce and
underfunded, increased book lending among friends and colleagues could
have a great impact.

By the way, I don't know if you knew about the Five Laws of Library
Sciences [1], but they are the perfect guide to every decision one has
to make when developing a system like this:

1. Books are for use.
2. Every person his or her book.
3. Every book its reader.
4. Save the time of the reader.
5. The library is a growing organism.

Kirbi was inspired by the First Law.

Hello,

This is to introduce the Wandering Books GSoC project that is starting
today. Martijn Faassen is the mentor, and I am the student.

Our goal is to implement a full-fledged multi-lingual sample app for
Grok/Zope 3, documenting and extending the framework as needed.

The app to be developed is an engine for http://WanderingBooks.org, a
site designed to make it easy for anyone to turn their personal book
collections into circulating libraries. The engine will e called Kirbi
and will eventually be deployed at WanderingBooks.org (in English) and
Circulante.org (in Portuguese).

WanderingBooks.org currently runs a prototype built with Horde/PHP
which will be replaced by the new Kirbi built with Grok/Zope 3.

Circulante.org will provide the case study for my Library Sciences
degree.

More information about the project, in English, can be found here:
http://circulante.incubadora.fapesp.br/portal/about

Here is the 2007 GSoC application for this project:

And this is the more detailed 2006 GSoC application:

I am very excited about the opportunity to work with Martijn and to
contribute to Grok and Zope 3.
