Last week, Gartner Dataquest released its analysis of the
2001 DBMS market and came to the conclusion that perennial
leader Oracle has been reduced to second place. It said that
Big Blue's fast growth and acquisition of Informix helped
push it to the top of the heap with 35% of overall market
share, while Oracle slipped to 32%. Microsoft's share rose
the fastest--a whopping 18%--though they are still a distant
third.
Sound fishy to you? Perhaps it should. As expected,
Oracle has quickly cried foul. CEO Larry Ellison has been
saying since at least last autumn's Oracle OpenWorld
conference that the market numbers are faulty. This time at
least, I'm inclined to believe him. Here are Oracle's
criticisms in a nutshell:
- IBM lumps in such diverse offerings as ISAM and VMS with
its DB2 database sales.
- Microsoft includes Access sales along with the SQL
Server numbers.
- The revenue and growth data provided to the industry
analysts by the vendors themselves is not independently
validated, outside of Oracle's.
- Oracle says that it has seen virtually no defections
from its huge installed base.
These are solid criticisms and put Gartner's conclusions
in serious doubt. What's your take on the issue? Does Oracle
deserve the drubbing that it's been taking for the last
year? Is Microsoft poised to rule the database world?
Take our poll and let your voice be heard.
Cheers, Tim
