 From the Editor:

by Tim DiChiara, Site Editor

The SearchDatabase.com team is headed over to San Francisco in a few weeks for Oracle's massive (and newly renamed) OracleWorld conference. Perhaps "massive" might not be the right term this year.

It's a fait accompli that trade show attendance is way down for a litany of dismal reasons: the U.S recession, the continuing dot bomb era, terrorism threats. Despite 400 technical sessions, 250 vendor exhibitions, keynote histrionics by all the top brass from Oracle -- including Larry Ellison, who will be "live from New Zealand" for some reason -- and even "rock and roll Karaoke," anecdotal evidence is that OW will be no exception to the downward spiral. I recently polled SearchDatabase.com's Oracle experts and almost all weren't attending this year due to budget cuts.

What do you think about trade shows these days -- are they worth the considerable expense? Is your department's travel budget going to be cut next year? Which ones do you find the most useful and why? Pop on over to our DBA Water Cooler discussion forum and offer your proverbial two cents.

Thanks, and have a great week, Tim
