It will be first time that AOL has attempted to open its popular IM network to communicate with an outside company. AOL has been under pressure to do so. The trial will be conducted between AIM and Lotus' Sametime. Competitors are critical of AOL's choice of Lotus as a testing partner because it is a minor player in the instant messaging field. IBM will release an interoperability bundle in October that will link K-station and WebSphere Portal Server. Lotus' existing K-station clients will receive the interoperability bundle and new WebSphere Portal Server upgrade for free. About 60 companies are using K-station, with tens of thousands of end-user deployments. IBM released a free Software Evaluation Kit for Linux to developers. It includes applications such as the IBM WebSphere Application Server, the DB2 Universal Database Enterprise Edition Version 7.2 for Linux, Lotus Domino Server Release 5.0.7a for Linux and a variety of other Java and XML tools.
