LEAD STORY:
"AOL gets ready to chat with IBM's Lotus"
AOL and Lotus will test ways for their instant messaging services to
communicate with each other. It will be first time that AOL has
attempted to open its popular IM network to communicate with an
outside company. AOL has been under pressure to do so. The trial will
be conducted between AIM and Lotus' Sametime. Competitors are
critical of AOL's choice of Lotus as a testing partner because it is
a minor player in the instant messaging field.

[1] "Lotus ships beta 3 of Domino Rnext"
Lotus released beta 3 of the next version of its Domino server,
code-named RNext, expected to ship early next year. It includes new
integration features that more deeply integrates the server with
IBM's WebSphere Application Server and DB2 database. Lotus CEO Al
Zollar announced in January his intention to expose Domino's
collaboration features as components and this is the first evidence
of that transformation. Pricing was not announced.

[2] "IBM merges Lotus K-station with WebSphere"
Lotus parent IBM is merging Lotus' K-station enterprise portal
builder with its WebSphere Portal Server. IBM will release an
interoperability bundle in October that will link K-station and
WebSphere Portal Server. Lotus' existing K-station clients will
receive the interoperability bundle and new WebSphere Portal Server
upgrade for free. About 60 companies are using K-station, with tens

[3] "When Linux grows up, IBM glad to boot AIX"
IBM continued its vocal support of the Linux operating system saying
it will gladly drop its version of Unix from servers and replace it
with Linux if the software matures so that it can handle the most
demanding tasks. IBM released a free Software Evaluation Kit for
Linux to developers. It includes applications such as the IBM
WebSphere Application Server, the DB2 Universal Database Enterprise
Edition Version 7.2 for Linux, Lotus Domino Server Release 5.0.7a for
Linux and a variety of other Java and XML tools.

[4] "IBM retools WebSphere for remote access"
IBM plans to improve parts of its WebSphere application server to
make it easier for businesses to make information on the Web and in
corporate databases available to mobile users, particularly using
speech technologies. The technology may be useful to customers who
want to make information stored in corporate databases accessible to
workers on the road, or to service providers who offer sports, news
and other types of information to users on the move.

[6] "Viruses wiggle into IM chats"
Having long targeted e-mail with sometimes devastating effects, virus
and worm creators are setting their sights on instant messaging
services. Infected files, for example, have been burrowing their way
slowly through Microsoft's MSN Messenger network over the past few
months. So far AOL Time Warner's AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ or
Yahoo's Yahoo Messenger have been spared virus attacks.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
-------------------------------------------------
"A dot-com by any other name"
It could be the plot of a cheesy spy novel: A technology start-up
receives cash from a benignly named venture capital fund only to find
out the CIA was behind the money! Yet, that exactly describes
In-Q-Tel, which was founded in 1999 with $90 million from Congress.
The company, which takes its name from "intelligence" and James
Bond's gadget guru "Q," seeks to give the CIA access to emerging
technologies it finds of interest. Think companies shy away? Well,
other VCs actually ask In-Q-Tel to review their projects. If the CIA
is interested, then the product must be hot, right? Any profits from
the investment will either be reinvested in In-Q-Tel or used to help
the CIA implement some of the technology it sponsored.
