LEAD STORY:
WEB SERVICES WITH A BIG BLUE TINT | News: Serverworld
IBM has been busy lately developing tools for creation and deployment
of Web services for its Lotus, DB2 and Tivoli environments. Now that
Big Blue is consolidating those tools into more integrated,
cross-platform solution packages, the computing giant may have the
most diverse Web services program of any major vendor to date.

ZACKER WORM ATTACKS SECURITY SOFTWARE | InfoWorld
Symantec is warning users against the Maldal.D worm, which spreads
via e-mail with the subject line, ZaCker. Maldal deletes .INI, .EXE
and .JPG files, once executed. It also attempts to delete antivirus
programs.

INSTANT MESSAGING VIRUSES SET TO SOAR | vnunet
Antivirus software vendor McAfee fears 2002 may be the year of the
instant messaging virus. Their advice for corporate users is for
companies to take the initiative to implement content scanning and
blocking technologies. The warning comes as AOL has announced that
it's working to fill a security hole in its instant messaging tool
that could let a worm wriggle in.

IDC: USERS SLOW TO UPGRADE WINDOWS VERSIONS | InfoWorld
Constant Windows upgrades that are too time consuming to keep track
of seem to be scaring some corporate IT departments away from the
server operating system, according to an IDC survey.

STUDY: IT STARTING SALARIES TO STAY FLAT IN 2002 | IT World
IT workers will see starting salaries barely budge in 2002, according
to RHI Consulting. The bleak compensation outlook follows huge
increases in 2001, a year in which starting pay rose 8.4%.

THE MISSING LINK | E-MAIL GLITCH BLOCKS HARVARD ACCEPTANCE E-MAILS

The good folks at AOL must be Yale grads. Harvard had a little
problem notifying some applicants of their admission status. The
school uses e-mail to tell eager applicants "yes" or "no." Too bad
the most important e-mails in the lives of some 75 to 100 young
people were blocked and sent back to Cambridge as spam! Crimson-faced
AOL still can't explain why. Most of those would-be students and
rejects had to go the old fashioned route to find out -- they picked
up the phone and called.
