The general manager of IBM's Rational Software group says his organization is driving Big Blue's overall software development strategy, and that one of IBM's key software goals is to offer a complete, end-to-end lifecycle that includes tools and underlying runtime environments, such as WebSphere and DB2.

Friday was a long day's journey into knighthood for Tim Berners-Lee. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him for that handy little invention of his -- the World Wide Web. Berners-Lee now adds knight commander -- the second-highest rank of the Order of the British Empire -- to his list of accolades. You may call him Sir Berners-Lee, but don't call him surly -- he used the regal occasion to thank everyone who had helped him with his creation.
