The company's total number of jettisoned jobs this year will reach 8,500. Intel's new and improved version of the Pentium III Xeon top-end server chip should be ready to go by mid-August; for now Intel will swap out the defective chip with the slower 700MHz version. Intel stopped shipping the chip in April because of a bug that could crash servers. A group of security experts found a chink in Check Point Software's Firewall-1 and VPN-1 firewalls that could let intruders push unwanted traffic into or out of corporate networks. CERT says the hole could open up a nasty can of worms, from snooping to denial-of-service attacks. Check Point has a patch - you may want to check it out.
