The company has kept on top of the need for utilization software, despite the lure of sexy technologies like SANs, which Bloom says is still in the experimental stage. Veritas has plenty of meat-and-potatoes products to rely on before SAN spending starts to kick in, and Bloom highlighted that the transition of storage value from hardware to software continues to keep the vendor at the top of the storage heap in these tough times. This one's from Sun Microsystems. And, it does a good job of positioning Sun's own storage product line and technologies in the process. But, what we really liked about this white paper was the picture it painted of the need for scalable storage. Whether or not you are in the market for Sun products, the trends and insight on today's enterprise storage needs make this one worth a quick glance. Big Blue has developed an "Artificial Passenger" to keep travel weary drivers awake at the wheel. The system changes radio stations to see if the driver notices, cracks jokes, and includes a conversation planner program that asks questions and measures response times to determine if you're dozing in the driver's seat. If the computer receives a sluggish response it squirts a chilling shot of ice water in your face. Suggestions for an optional Three Stooges package that sprays seltzer instead of water and then calls you a "knucklehead," have been dismissed.
