LEAD STORY

"New Telnet hole affects some Unix-based servers"
A security hole has been found in a Unix-based operating system that
could let hackers take over or crash the Web server. The problem
centers around the Telnetd program of FreeBSD's open-source operating
systems built on Berkeley Software Design code. Security experts
aren't sure if HP-UX or Solaris could be affected.

[1] "Microsoft acknowledges problem with services for Unix"
In another episode of "As the Patch Turns," Microsoft has plugged a
memory hole in the latest version of its Unix interoperability
software. A bad person could use the hole in Services for Unix (SFU)
2.0 to crash Windows NT and Windows 2000 servers. The patch will be
included in SFU 3.0.

[2] "Hewlett-Packard to cut 6,000 jobs, miss 3rd-qtr sales"
The good news is HP will save $500 million per year. The bad news is
those savings come at a cost of 6,000 pink slips. The company will
fire more than 6% of its workforce for the sake of fiscal health.
HP's sales this quarter are below expectations.

"The humiliation virus"
Here's another really good reason not to put into writing anything
you wouldn't say aloud to a room full of people. Sircam, the latest
virus spreading on the Net, grabs a random document from your
computer's hard drive, hides itself in the code, then passes on the
infected document to everyone in your digital address book. That
means any document on your hard drive is fair game for distribution
to practically everyone you know.
