Bill Gates will announce the availability of Visual Studio.Net beta 2, which allows developers to create components with native XML interfaces that can interoperate with other Web services. Redmond wants to outdo Sun and IBM in the XML-based Web services game. As Redmond rolls out Visual Studio.Net Beta 2 at Tech Ed 2001, Oracle and Sun will announce a partnership aimed at wooing Microsoft developers to "the Java side." The partnership will include a set of new Java-based technologies and tools. SOURCE: CRN http://www.crn.com/Sections/BreakingNews/BreakingNews.asp?ArticleID=27436 [3] "Users report frustration with Redmond's recent security record" Is Microsoft too insecure, or are its customers? Over the past month, Redmond has done more patching up than a marriage counselor (IIS 5.0, Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000, SQL Server 7.0 and SQL Server 2000). Security experts say don't blame Microsoft for all this. Customer demand may be partly to blame, along with a general rise in security vulnerabilities for all platforms. SOURCE: ENT Magazine http://www.entmag.com/breaknews.asp?ID=4627 [4] "Finger pointing begins as Microsoft/AOL talks end again" Microsoft and AOL could not reach an agreement to include AOL's next Internet client in Windows XP. Now it looks like all bets are off. Each behemoth blames the other for the breakdown: AOL says Microsoft wants to dominate the Internet music market with its Windows Media technologies, and Microsoft says AOL refused to make its Instant Messaging software compatible with the rest of the market. Encounter 2001, a Texas company, is charging $50 to carry digitized photos, messages and DNA samples on a spacecraft scheduled for blast off in 2003. So far, 67,000 people have signed up, although there is room for messages and dehydrated hair samples with the DNA codes for 4.5 million people. And the point of all this? "One day, some super civilization may encounter this relic from the vanished species and I may exist in another time," said science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, who was among the first to register.
