[1] "Office XP: Two thirds of German users against compulsory
registration"
A new poll shows most Germans are just saying "nein" to one of
Microsoft's controversial demands. Two out of three users are balking
at the mandatory registration for Office XP. Most of those dissenters
are activating Office XP with a skeleton key from the Internet.

[2] "Sun's rising star enters Microsoft space"
Some folks are fed up with the way Microsoft is changing its
licensing terms. Case in point: The Central Scotland Police, which
has moved more than 1,000 users to StarOffice. The cops say they'll
save thousands of pounds by dumping MS.

[3] "Hidden pitfalls in .Net open source?"
Remember Ximian's announcement last month that it will create an
open-source version of .Net? Some experienced open source code
developers are afraid this project (called "Mono") may run into a
brick wall...called Microsoft. Redmond owns some of those technologies
and could make developers pay up every time an open source version of
its patent is used.

[4] "XP gets backing from Microsoft partners"
Microsoft last week said XP is still scheduled to be ready October
25th despite speculation that the new OS could be a target in the
next round of antitrust rulings. Also more than 20 of Microsoft's OEM
and ISV partners say they will support XP's new features.

"Survey says MCSE base salaries dropping"
The average base salary for MCSEs is down 7% over last year, dropping
from $67,800 to $63,400, according to a survey of 6,500 U.S.
Microsoft certified professionals conducted by Wilson Research Group.
There's some good news for those with Windows 2000 certification,
though: Win2k-certified professionals earn an average of $4,400 more
than their NT-certified peers. Regardless of certification, bonuses
are down as well -- 40% lower than last year according to the survey.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"M-commerce breakthrough: Parking meters"

This may be taking mobile e-commerce (m-commerce) to a new level. In
Australia, two vendors have teamed up to install wireless parking
meters. Soprano Design and Wilson Equipment Services have more than
400 of the wireless meters running in the commercial centers in
Leichardt. Motorists can pay using Short Message Service (SMS)
messages or voice commands over their wireless devices. Coins are
still okay too. And forget about forgetting to refill the meter.
Users can receive "time's-up" alerts, and refill automatically. The
one downside? The cops are using the technology to write citations
quicker as well.
