"Disabling Windows 2000 default shares"
By Adesh Rampat

When you install Windows 2000, you enable certain default shares.
Adesh suggests that you disable them, with some caveats.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows 2000 operating system includes default hidden shares that are
open for use by the system account. To view the entire local hidden
shared folders, type the following from the command prompt: net share

If you don't need them, you should disable the default shares because
they can offer an intruder an entry point into a system. You might
not need the shares if you have servers that are used for application
testing or servers that handle logon services. In instances like
these, the server service can be disabled. This will lessen the
chance of creating a hole in your network.

However, you need to take certain precautions when disabling shares.
For example, some applications may require the use of the hidden
shared folders. Before disabling hidden shares, check all software
applications that are loaded to ensure that they are not using any of
the hidden shares, especially with network servers.

Disabling all the default shares can be performed through the
following steps:

Disabling the Server Service via Control Panel
- Go To Control Panel
- Click on Administrative Tools
- Select Services
- Locate the Server Service (for workstations locate the workstation
service)
- Double-click on the Server Service.
- Click on the drop-down button in the Startup Type box then click on
disable.
