LEAD STORY
"New judge assigned in Microsoft trial"

It's been a busy day in Washington -- a federal court has picked U.S.
District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly to wield the gavel in the
Microsoft antitrust case. Also, a federal appeals court shipped the
Microsoft case off to trial court.

[1] "New virus has offensive streak"
What's a good way to "hose" your computer? Open an e-mail or Web page
laced with the Trojan.Offensive virus. The pernicious program
exploits a flaw in Microsoft's version of the Java Virtual Machine to
overwrite the registry and trash Windows computers. A patch has been
available to caulk the flaw, so this shouldn't be (knock on wood)
outbreak material.

[2] "Windows 2000 port invites intruders"
How did a hacker walk right into Microsoft's corporate network and
get full access to hundreds of the company's computers? He says he
didn't need a bug or a crowbar -- instead he says he just came
through the systems' back door, using Windows 2000's TCP port 445,
which is open by default to allow file sharing with remote systems.

[3] "New worm poses as helpful program"
Beware of bad worms in good worms' clothing. "Win32.All3gro.A"
promises to purge nasty viruses from computers, but experts say it
really leaves the viruses intact and treats files like a buffet.

[4] "Gartner: Internet users either distrust or snore over Microsoft
Passport"
Mention Microsoft Passport, and most users are either overcome with
suspicion or apathy. A Gartner survey found this to be the case, and
one would think the findings wouldn't bode well for Passport. But
Gartner expects most XP users to sign up for the authentication
service -- it will be bundled into XP.

"DeployCenter takes the pain out of PCs"

Reviewer Tom Maddox tested PowerQuest's DeployCenter 5.0 -- a
deployment tool whose purpose is to simplify and reduce day-to-day
maintenance and setup tasks. Upshot: DeployCenter can be a
cost-effective tool for streamlining IT workloads under the right
circumstances. Pros: The tool automates repetitive setup tasks,
simplifies remote system maintenance and software installation,
centralizes computer administration and has an intuitive UI. Cons: It
has a laborious installation process, severe limitations for laptop
users and requires reboot to DOS for most client functions.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Keyboards spread disease"

When was the last time you washed your hands? Apparently humans are
not the only organisms getting hip to the computer age. Bacteria are
too. Britain's "The Mirror" conducted an experiment in a London
office and found that computer keyboards are popular bacterial
hangouts. The little things love the warmth (no word which keys they
prefer -- maybe the letter "b" for "bacteria"?). The experiment did
not turn up the really sickening stuff like salmonella and E. coli,
but there's always next time!
