LEAD STORY

"The Linux love affair: Will users ever be able to commit?"

The penguin may be a flightless bird on the ice, but it has really
taken off in the enterprise. But is it ready for prime time? Some
TechTarget users sound off on Linux, and why they want to "keep
dating" but they're not ready to "go steady."

TODAY'S WINDOWS 2000 AND INDUSTRY NEWS

[1] Ditch Microsoft IIS now, says Gartner
[2] MS vows rewritten IIS, more patches
[3] New worm exploits terrorist attacks
[4] Microsoft's Gates pushes on with Big Apple launch for Windows XP

[1] "Ditch Microsoft IIS now, says Gartner"
Ouch! Gartner says if Code Red and Nimda have hit you, it's time to
drop what you're doing and find an alternative to IIS - maybe iPlanet
or Apache. Gartner apparently thinks IIS is still too buggy --
analysts even recommend keeping your distance from .Net until IIS is
"completely rewritten."

[2] "MS vows rewritten IIS, more patches"
Microsoft plans to rewrite IIS 6.0 and have it ready by the end of
next year. That's a long time to wait, so Redmond will also make some
interim security tools available, like an IIS Lockdown tool in
Windows 2000 SP3 and an early release of .Net Server's Auto Update
tool.

[3] "New worm exploits terrorist attacks"
How twisted is this: Some virus writers are apparently exploiting the
events of 9/11 to spread their work. A worm called W32.Vote and
WTC.exe comes as an e-mail message asking for peace between America
and Islam. But it's really a wolf in dove's clothing, unleashing a
payload that wipes out the PC's system files and overwrites HTML
files. Don't open that attachment!

[4] "Microsoft's Gates pushes on with Big Apple launch for Windows
XP"
Validating New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani's statement that New York
is open for business, Bill Gates said the show will go on as planned
-- XP will be launched October 25th in New York at the Marriott
Marquis Theatre in Times Square.

ASK THE EXPERT
====================================================================

Dear Ask the Expert,
I have a job installing computers for a major corporation. I would
like to stay in IT when this job is finished. Is there any place I
can find out what specific IT skills employers are still looking for?
I think I might want to go into security.

THE MISSING LINK
---------------------------------------------------------------
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Laid-off techies swiping goods on way out"

Hello pink slips, goodbye laptops. As Internet start-ups go belly up,
laid off employees are bellying up to the spoils. More and more
disillusioned workers are stealing stuff -- looting laptops, heisting
handhelds, mooching monitors, pilfering printers and filching
furniture like they were consolation prizes. Insurance companies and
security experts nationwide say employee theft is on the rise,
especially in the technology industry. The "you lay me off, I'll rip
you off" mentality isn't really even hurting its intended targets.
Asset-management companies, furniture leasing companies and other
firms that loaned the failed companies their equipment are the ones
smarting from the stealing.

"I was one of the 750,000 SirCam victims. One employee let the virus
in by accessing his personal email account over the web. I had no
control then. But now I'm using SuperScout Web Filter to block access
to Hotmail, Yahoo...actually all web-based email sites. They say
SirCam may never go away, but it might if everyone was protected by
SuperScout." -Network Manager.
