LEAD STORY

The MCSE reprieve | searchWin2000

Last week Redmond offered some clemency, deciding that MCSEs on
Windows NT 4.0 will keep their certification indefinitely. Those
certifications were condemned and sentenced to a December 31, 2001
execution date -- why the about-face? SearchWin2000 certification
expert Ed Tittel has a few ideas.

Group: MS license delay 'not enough' | IT Week

A UK IT interest group is pleased that Microsoft has pushed its
Software Assurance deadline to July 31, 2002, but members of the
Infrastructure Forum would like to see more options. The group
doesn't think MS understands how worried businesses are about the
license changes that Gartner predicts could jack up software costs by
up to 107%.

Microsoft slams 'information anarchy' | vnunet

Too much information? A Microsoft security expert says the open
nature of the security community is a double-edged sword. Scott Culp
says the "full disclosure" approach to dealing with vulnerabilities
can actually do more harm than good because it gives the bad people
the weapons they need to do their dirty deeds.

ASK THE EXPERT | Mark Edmead

Dear Ask the Expert,
I've got a computer workstation that is affected by the Nimda virus.
Once I do a cleanup, how can I make sure that the virus has really
been removed? Is monitoring the amount of free space on the hard disk
(allowing for the normal fill rate) enough?

See expert Mark Edmead's response:

THE MISSING LINK | US Net user saves Brit trapped in shed

A shed, where low-tech usually rules, is not the place you'd expect
digital technology to save the day. But a British bloke in Blackburn
sure is glad his outbuilding is outfitted with a PC and an Internet
connection. The shed surfer somehow got locked inside and couldn't
get out. But this was no Brit out of luck. He got online and
dispatched an SOS to a user group message board. Someone across the
pond, in the U.S., got the message and called Blackburn police. The
guy's biggest challenge was convincing users his shed situation was
no shenanigan.
