LEAD STORY

TENTATIVE MICROSOFT ACCORD REACHED | Mercury News

It's a possible settlement that Microsoft competitors find
unsettling. The government and the company have reportedly hammered
out an agreement in which MS would share more of its secrets and give
PC makers more say in how they configure Windows. But Redmond's
rivals don't think the terms of this deal will muzzle Microsoft's
monopolistic ways.

SAP DENIES GETTING COZY WITH JAVA OVER .NET | IDG News

SAP is doing a little clarifying. The company says it is NOT ditching
.Net for J2EE, as reported in the Financial Times. SAP says it chose
to use Java in-house along with its own internal language (ABAP). As
far as its commercial ventures go and what customers may expect, the
company says it will support both Java and .Net.

MICROSOFT,IBM COLLABORATE ON WEB STANDARD | ZDNet

Microsoft and IBM are working together on a new Web standard that
will let businesses easily find each other's services over the
Internet. WS-Inspection is the fourth Web services standard that
Redmond and Big Blue have cranked out together.

ASK THE EXPERT | John Robbins

Dear Ask the Expert,
When I attempt to log on, I end up in some sort of repeating loop
even though my sign-in is validated and accepted. At some point the
system indicates there is insufficient pagefile size as well. I've
tried the Windows 2000 Recovery Tool as well as the Repair Option
without luck. Can I edit the Windows 2000 registry from DOS?

THE MISSING LINK | Sex and the cell phone-deprived

The cell phone -- it's not only a gadget, it's also a mojo. At least
in Italy. Researchers there took away the cell phones of 300 people
for two weeks just to see what would happen if they went
wireless-less. A lot of those people went haywire! Seventy percent
said their lives were empty without their Ericssons, moot without
their Motorolas and naught without their Nokias. And, 25% said not
having their cell phones had their libidos searching for a signal --
they felt disconnected sexually. That's "amore"! So if you're having
trouble, um, "completing a call," maybe you should think Verizon
instead of Viagra.
