LEAD STORY

GARTNER: PATCH HOLES, PRESSURE COMPANIES | News: Gartner

Gartner security expert John Pescatore says there's a good chance a
nasty worm like Nimda will appear in the next six weeks. He says make
sure all the appropriate patches are in place, and perform backups of
server software configurations (so the version in backup storage has
the patch). He also says to make sure to update all tools used to
monitor configuration compliance to require the latest patched
version.

The Reeezak worm spreads via e-mail and arrives with a Christmas

A PINK SLIP FOR A PINK SLIP | The Missing Link

When grocery store chain Winn-Dixie Stores found out one of its truck
drivers is a transvestite, the company told him to hit the road.
Peter Oiler had worked for the company for 21 years and apparently
didn't wear a frock on the clock. Now he's slipping into some
revenge. The work phone numbers of the people who helped oust Oiler
are posted on ShameonWinnDixie.com, a Web site supported by the
American Civil Liberties Union. Sure beats scrawling their numbers in
the stall of a truck stop men's room! As you might expect, Winn-Dixie
officials want the site shut down.
