     From the Editor:

    by Ed Parry, News Editor

Have you seen IBM's TV commercial where former basketball players represent different IT players? Big Blue's starting five are Mainframe, Middleware, PC, Linux and Firewall. Roger Pence, the host of Win2000 Talk Radio, saw that commercial and wondered what a Microsoft team might look like. He suggested Scalability, Ease of Use, Security, Reliability and Tech Support -- with Barney Fife representing security! Considering Microsoft's patchy security record, Mayberry's chief deputy would be offended at the analogy and rightfully so. But last week, Microsoft hired Scott Charney to be its security czar. Barney Fife he ain't! Charney has a resume that includes stints with the Department of Justice and PricewaterhouseCoopers' Cybercrime Prevention and Response Practice. This guy should be the Mutombo of Microsoft (Dikembe Mutombo has been the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year four times) and maybe he's proof Bill Gates really meant it when he promised his company would play better "D."
