LEAD STORY

NEW KLEZ VARIANT CAN DO SOME DAMAGE | News: SearchSecurity

The Klez-I worm carries a boatload of potential problems, not the
least of which is the Elkern virus, a piece of malicious code that
likes to overwrite executables. Klez-I spreads via its own e-mail
engine with multiple subject lines and file names for the infected
attachment. Also, Outlook users beware -- Klez-I can execute through
the preview pane.

MICROSOFT DEFENDS BASELINE SECURITY ANALYZER TOOL | News: InfoWorld

Microsoft said users of its Baseline Security Analyzer vulnerability
scanner might be misinterpreting results generated by the tool.
Complaints surfaced this week that the tool does not recognize new
patches and identifies phantom flaws. Microsoft said the analyzer,
based on a similar HFNetChk product, does not allow users to suppress
security bulletins the way HFNetChk does. Also, if hotfixes do not
come from Microsoft, the company said, the tool will issue a warning.

IE BACK BUTTON 'BAD FOR YOUR DATA' | News: vnunet

A security expert in Sweden warns of a flaw in Internet Explorer that
allows an attacker to run code of their choice when the back button
is clicked. The flaw centers on the fact that IE allows URLs
containing Java script to be filed into the browser's history list.
Attackers spiking the link with malicious code can trigger it to
activate when the back button is clicked. The expert said Microsoft
was notified in November, and last month, and has not yet responded.
He did offer a workaround: disable active scripting in the browser or
stop using the back button.

MICROSOFT'S CRYSTAL BALL | News: CNET

Over the next five years, desktop computing will further embrace
digital media and will include a shift to software as a Web-delivered
service, Microsoft predicts. With on of the world's more popular PC
operating systems, Microsoft has a lot of influence with (and at
stake in) the future of PCs.

STOP/START SERVICES WITH BATCH FILE BEFORE BACKUP | Ask the Expert

Dear Ask the Expert,
In Windows 2000, is there a way to stop and start non-MS services
with a batch file? Our backup software has an Exchange agent that is
dependent upon a non-MS service being run. The service sometimes
hangs, or spontaneously stops, and our Exchange backup fails. The
software vendor is no help, so we'd like to be able to automate the
process by stopping and starting the service every night prior to the
backup.

CHILDREN ARE NOT SO SMART ONLINE | The Missing Link

Sick of that sinking feeling you get whenever your kids go online?
You know that sense that your little rug rats are far more Web savvy
than you'll ever be. Well, a new study indicates that the long-held
theory that kids make better Web surfers than adults may not be
completely true. Among the encouraging findings for elder cyber-peeps
is that kids get frustrated with badly designed Web sites just as
quickly as their adult counterparts. See, it wasn't just your
eyesight; there really are a lot of horribly illegible Web sites out
there. Just ask your kids.
