LEAD STORY

BALLMER: MICROSOFT TO LAUNCH SECURITY UPDATE TOOL | News: IDG News

Here's a Microsoft update -- about Microsoft Update. It's a new tool
that will automate the process of publishing and distributing the
myriad Microsoft security patches. It will be a lot like Windows
Update and should help firms get a firm grip on all the patches, of
which there seems to be a deluge! Steve Ballmer says MU should be out
this year.

MICROSOFT PATCHES OUTLOOK HOLE | News: IDG News

Microsoft has patched an Outlook crack that could affect you if you
use Word for editing e-mail. The flaw comes from different security
settings in the two applications. The end result could be an attacker
running code on your PC, if you replied to or forwarded the "bait"
e-mail. More patch info is at

WINDOWS DEVELOPER COMBATS CODE CRITICS | News: Reuters

Bill Gates is off, Christopher Jones is on. Jones, who's Microsoft's
head of Windows desktop development, told the court the penalties
proposed by the nine dissenting states would create computerized
chaos. Jones testified that PC users would be confused and frustrated
if products marketed as Windows operating systems couldn't run
Windows applications because someone had tinkered with blocks of
software code.

SQUEEZABLE CELLPHONE ADDS NEW MEANING TO CALLING | The Missing Link

"Squeezable" products could soon spread beyond mere condiments like
ketchup and mustard. MIT researchers have come up with a latex cell
phone that sends vibrations as well as voices. The phone comes with
tiny speakers and pressure sensors you wrap around your fingers.
Squeeze your hand, and the person you're talking to (provided they
have a squeezable phone, too) can "feel" it, minus the sweaty palm.
The good thing about this? It lends credibility to that "reach out
and touch someone" slogan. The bad thing? When creditors or loan
sharks put the squeeze on you, you'll feel it. And it might hurt.
