MS EXEC CLAIMS ERROR ON .NET SERVER DATE | News: IDG News

Ooops! The Microsoft exec who said .NET Server had been pushed back
to a mid-2003 release has issued a Microsoft "mea culpa." Enrique
Murray said he misspoke, and that .NET Server is in fact due near the
end of 2002. Murray claimed he confused the calendar year with the
fiscal year. Microsoft's fiscal year begins in July.

MICROSOFT EXCELS AT INSECURITY | News: The Register

Bulgarian bug hunter and unofficial bug in Microsoft's craw Georgi
Guninski has seen the company's patch for an Outlook hole -- and he
doesn't think it goes far enough. Last week Microsoft patched a flaw
that affects Word when it's used for editing e-mail. The flaw comes
from different security settings in the two applications. The end
result could be an attacker running code on your PC if you replied to
or forwarded the "bait" e-mail. Guninski says Microsoft's patch does
not fix "at least the exploit path" through Excel, which can likewise
be exploited.

NEW MICROSOFT SECURITY CHIEF TO JUGGLE TECH, POLICY | News: Reuters

Scott Charney is Microsoft's new chief security strategist. A former
cybercop with the Justice Department, Charney defined two priorities
for Microsoft: review the company's products and protect the nation's
computer infrastructure running on Microsoft software. Perhaps
Charney's biggest challenge, however, will be dealing with the
industry-wide mistrust from security experts.

CROOKS CAUSE CHILEAN CAR CHAOS | The Missing Link

It's one thing when the servers crash. It's quite another when
they're whisked off in a van when no one is looking. Thieves in
Santiago, Chile did just that, stealing more than a dozen PCs and a
pair of servers from the office that controls the city's traffic
lights. The result? Andean angst! In a city of more than five million
people, nearly half of the traffic lights went haywire -- still
working, but totally out of synch. Just imagine everybody going and
everybody stopping in all directions at the same time. Good thing the
city had a backup plan. Spare software kept things from getting even
more out of control.
