  •  What you love and hate about Microsoft

    by Marilyn Cohodas, Site Editor

Almost 1,000 of you took the time to respond to our user satisfaction survey and, at least to me, the results are both astonishing and predictable. Predictable in the findings that Windows IT pros don't like Microsoft's haughty ways, are troubled about the security of its products and incensed about being on an upgrade treadmill. I'm astonished to learn that more than half of you are so frustrated with Microsoft prices and policies that you admit you are looking at software alternatives much more vigorously than you were a year ago.

There are also some noteworthy revelations. Kudos are definitely in order for Windows 2000 Professional and Server, two impressive products that earned high marks for overall quality, reliability and usability. I also found it interesting that, despite its complexity, Active Directory has found a home in over half the Windows shops in our survey base.

Thanks for your help. We hope to make this mid-year report card an annual feature on SearchWin2000. We'll be looking for your input again next year. In the meantime, let us know if you agree or disagree with our conclusions.

The results are in. You love Win2000 but .NET is just plain confusing. More than half of you will be running AD by year-end. And product security, customer support and upgrades are among your biggest gripes. Read on for more.

    >> Are licensing issues keeping your company from moving to Windows 2000?

    Tip of the Week:
For some reason, the Windows XP Professional ships with a new networking service called Quality of Service (QoS) enabled by default, even though this service is of use only in large corporate networks. At home and in smaller offices QoS is best left disabled, and doing so will speed up networking operations up to 20%. Confusingly, turning off QoS in Networking Properties will not actually free up the lost bandwidth. Instead, you must load up the Local Group Policy Editor and tweak some settings to get QoS out of your system for good. Read more:
