LEAD STORY

MS USERS LOVE WIN2K; HATE UPGRADES, ARROGANCE | News: SearchWin2000

An exclusive SearchWin2000 survey shows that the relationship between
Microsoft and the masses can be a dysfunctional love/hate story. Our
respondents graded Microsoft in a number of areas. Windows 2000 got
high marks, but Redmond got red flagged for all the darn upgrades,
the nebulous nature of .NET and shoddy security.

C# STRIKING A CHORD WITH PROGRAMMERS | News: CNET

C# is looking sharp -- a new survey shows 12% of North American
software developers are using C# -- that figure was 7% six months
ago. Evans Data predicts the number of programmers using C# will
double in the next year. VB developers like it a lot -- Java
developers less so. Analysts say C# isn't gaining at any other
language's expense, because most of the users are just testing it,
not going with it full steam.

APP-SERVER MARKET TO BOIL DOWN TO 4 SURVIVORS | News: InternetWeek

AMR researchers say the application server market is a drama with
four prime-time players -- Microsoft, Oracle, IBM and BEA. AMR said
the swell of support behind .NET has thrust Microsoft as the third
largest app server vendor, behind IBM and BEA. Sun didn't make the
list of marquee players, but it still has an important role as the
controller of the enterprise Java platform.

SHOCK ROCK FANS NEEDLE BRITISH KNITTING CIRCLE | The Missing Link

The Internet sure can make for some odd bedfellows. Fans of the
American shock rock band Slipknot (a band that makes KISS look like
Pat Boone) wanted to e-mail their idols, so they sent fawning
e-pistles to what they thought was the band's e-mail address. But the
e-mails ended up about 180 degrees off the mark -- in the inbox of a
ladies' knitting circle in the U.K.! When the fans found out the
recipients were more into hemming than headbanging, they bombarded
the nice ladies with a nastier batch of e-mails telling them to get
their darned selves off the Web. That must've made the poor knitters
spill their tea! Hope nobody in Slipknot splits their pants while
they're touring the U.K.
