LEAD STORY
Microsoft to change Windows to comply with antitrust settlement  (Bloomberg News)
Windows XP will bear the mark of the antitrust settlement. Instead of a scarlet "M" (monopoly) on the forehead, XP Service Pack 1 will let OEMs and users hide some of Microsoft's programs. A new button on the "Start" menu will offer four default options: computer manufacturer choice, Microsoft-only software, non-Microsoft software and customized settings. The patch will be ready for public consumption in late August.

Service Pack Manager 2000 (SPM2000) enables IT professionals to fix security vulnerabilities and stability problems in Windows NT/2000/XP and additional Microsoft products.

It is an automated security utility that allows an admin to remotely detect, track and install Windows NT/2000/XP Service Packs and hotfixes on the enterprise networks from a central console. SPM2000 is a highly cost-effective tool that makes the task of maintaining security of the large networks viable.

QUICK HIT OF THE DAY
Applying Win2k hotfixes via GPOs
Microsoft makes hotfixes easier to apply with a batch file it provides. But while scripting the install does make the process easier, you still have to log on to each server to run the script. To make this process much easier and almost automatic, you can create a group policy object (GPO) to do the work for you.
