    by Ed Parry, News Editor

Dueling directories, the Domino effect, Apache attacks, the Office onslaught -- Microsoft has some formidable foes in the battle for enterprise supremacy. Like Batman, Microsoft is battling a pesky penguin.

The company is also dealing with a licensing program that's going over like New Coke and a cynical vibe begotten of the antitrust trial. If you read the technology news from across the globe, it becomes more and more obvious that more and more customers are getting more and more restless when it comes to their relationships with Redmond. Goverments especially are looking to wean themselves from their Windows habits.

SearchWin2000 tried and tried to get Redmond to talk about the multi-front competition it's facing, but only one division, the SQL Server folks, was willing to give us an interview. Microsoft's competitors were more than willing to pitch their metaphorical baseballs and tell us how they can shatter a Window or two. Check out Margie Semilof's gaggle of goods on the site. Drop us a line and tell us if you're thinking about kicking the Windows habit. And could someone tell Microsoft, our phone is still open!

  • Tip of the Week: Help with debugging
During the course of installing and maintaining Windows 2000, you may often find yourself wandering through the Event Viewer, looking for errors or some hint to help you understand a problem. The Event Viewer is a very useful tool for security checking too, but it isn't the only place to find helpful information. In fact, much more detailed information can often be found in log files in your Ssystemrootbug directory.
