It's August 1, 2002 -- Licensing 6.0 has officially kicked in -- like it or not. Count most SearchWin2000 readers in the "not" category. Let's just say no one is really celebrating this day, except maybe Microsoft -- and the celebration may be short-lived according to some analysts.

Channel reports rush to MS license deals as deadline looms (CRN)
Despite the results of SearchWin2000's poll, which shows a surge of inertia, several software firms report a flurry of last-minute activity as customers rush to sign the dotted line before the midnight licensing deadline. One company, ASAP Software, is throwing out words like "big numbers" and "unprecedented" to describe what's going on. Another firm, Synnex, is using the word "swamped."

Corel happy to step into Microsoft's shoes (InternetNews)
If Licensing 6.0 has turned Microsoft's name to mud, then Corel is trying to turn mud into money. The company is hoping disgruntled Windows customers will show their disdain by buying Corel's WordPerfect suite of applications. The product offers MS Office-like apps without volume licensing commitments and without an annual upgrade fee.

Is that the IT department or the set of a Cheech and Chong movie? A survey in the U.K. shows that of the 72% of professionals who admit being pot smokers, almost half work in IT. And you thought the IT department took enough "hits" as it was! A firm called TongueWag did the survey, and it has...um...lit a fire in some circles. Researchers say the results "indicate that our preconceptions about cannabis users can be biased." Translation? Slackers, musicians, Cheech and Chong aren't the only ones rolling 'em.
