Holey moley! In response to our request for feedback, IT professionals bombarded our in-box with their opinions about Microsoft's new approach to competing with Linux and total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) comparisons between Windows and Linux.

Our query followed two stories, a news report and interview with Microsoft executive Peter Houston, about Microsoft's new anti-Linux marketing strategy and an upcoming Microsoft-funded TCO study.

SearchWindowsManageability has posted the first batch of letters and will be publishing over 60 more letters next week.

Next week SearchWindowsManageability will also be covering the LinuxWorld Conference in San Francisco. Why should a Windows site cover LinuxWorld? A better question might be, why is Microsoft exhibiting at LinuxWorld for the first time this year? We'll be seeking answers and insights at the conference. Stay tuned.

    Advice From Our Experts
    >> Ask Roberta Bragg: Locking down systems with Group Policy
Dear Roberta: We are in the process of defining policy for GPOs. We have several different job roles and classifications for our employees. We are having a hard time determining how we should going about locking down our systems with the GP. Could you give me a good area to start with so we can work our way through the process?

    >> Ask Jerry Honeycutt: Allowing users to burn CDs without giving them admin or power user rights
Dear Jerry: I'm with the U.S Air Force in England. We are currently running Win2000 with CD burners. We have too many users with local administrator rights. The problem is that most users have CD burners (Adaptec) and seem to need admin rights to burn CDs. How do I allow them to burn a CD without admin or poweruser rights?

    >> Ask Tony Northrup: Stopping users from listening to the radio on the Internet
Dear Tony: I want to stop users from listening to the radio on the Internet -- i.e., to stop streaming. How can I do that? I have already tried stopping it in the protocol filters by disabling the RTSP, but it doesn't work.

Tip of the Week: Reap the benefits of scripting security
For the Windows environment, it's an often overlooked and always underutilized truism that nearly everything an administrator can do inside a management console or GUI utility he or she can also accomplish at the command line. Likewise, the same is true when using any of a variety of Windows scripting tools. For the purposes of this tip, Tom Lancaster focuses on the kinds of "canned tools" that scripts can create to help automate (or at least speed up) typical security-related administrative tasks.
