It's patch time again! Microsoft has issued one to caulk a Windows 2000 flaw that could hand over the system keys to an attacker. That flaw is found in the Network Connection Manager. But wait, there's more! Another newly available patch covers holes in SQL Server 7.0 and 2000.

Ellison courts Linux, pans Microsoft (SearchWindowsManageability.com)
Oracle CEO Larry Ellison took his turn at the podium of the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo on Wednesday. To the surprise of no one, he talked up Oracle's Unbreakable Software Infrastructure for Linux. He also launched into his customary attack on Microsoft and counted the ways that Redmond is annoying its legions of customers.

LinuxWorld Expo: Torvalds says commercialization balances Linux (InfoWorld)
There's plenty of penguin pie for everyone, according to the man who baked it. Linus Torvalds said this week that his platform has enough room for vendors who are in it for business, and geeks who are in it for pleasure. He thinks it's fine for Linux to be marketed to the masses as long as technical innovation doesn't suffer.

THE MISSING LINK
IT staff are worst e-mail abusers

Are we an industry of spam-a-holics? A new survey (sponsored by an e-mail filtering firm) shows about two-thirds of employees open e-mails of questionable character and one-third of those people forward them on to friends and colleagues. And the employees most likely to sling the spam are the IT staff, the people you'd think would know better! Spam can be a Pandora's box of non-PC content that can get you a pink slip faster than you can say "Frederick's of Hollywood." The survey sponsor says spam awareness needs to be "built into the culture of an organization" and not just jotted down in a handbook.
