At a keynote address on Wednesday at the XML Web Services One Conference in Boston, one of Microsoft's top Web services architects said Web services will quickly disappear if companies can't move from merely implementing them to developing projects that make money off of them.

Don Box, who is also an original author of the Simple Object Access Protocol, gives this technology a two-year time period in which to take off. After that? "Nobody is going to spend money on [Web services] in two years if it doesn't provide real business value."

Is two years enough time to expect customers to move to a Web services world? Microsoft says that customers at this time should be looking for opportunities to pilot Web services. Web services may not work for everything, but they say that now is the time to find a project that you can use to try it on for size.

Most of the early adopters have started out in just that way. They install a pilot project and it takes off from there. But Web services are industry-driven today. For the vast majority of enterprises, Web services are a long way off. There are incomplete standards and questions about how security will be addressed.

IT executives are still trying to figure out what Web services mean to them and determine the tactical opportunities. Are you preparing your enterprise infrastructure for Web services? For those of you who have pilots underway, we want to hear about your early experiences. Send me an e-mail and let me know your thoughts and plans.
