NEWS
VPN could be a very prone network thanks to MS PPTP (IDG News)
Your VPN could be a very prone network, thanks to a flaw in Microsoft's Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) for securing VPNs. The flaw could provide a doorway to outside attackers. A security firm in Germany says that the Microsoft PPTP service that ships with Windows 2000 and XP carries an exploitable, pre-authentication buffer overflow -- the result could be a DoS attack. MS hasn't confirmed the flaw.

The rise of the CSO
A few years ago, CSOs would have been unusual. Today, however, more than 200 companies have chief security officers, according to analyst firm Giga Information Group in Cambridge, Mass. While the title shows businesses' increased awareness toward security issues, some may question the need to appoint a CSO. After all, shouldn't the CIO handle security?

ASK LAURA HUNTER
Can I get away with not enabling AD?
Dear Laura:
I am about to set up a network with Win2K Server as the operating system. I want to set the server as a PDC, but I do not want to enable Active Directory. This server must also be a DNS server and a DHCP server. Please advise.
