Have you been reading our series of security reports? It's called "Battening down the Windows," and every day this week, like last week, we're going to spotlight the hottest topics in Windows security. We were going to give the series a one-week run, but our cup of stories runneth over -- and spilleth into this week. Let's face it -- when it comes to Windows and security, you really can't say enough.

Last week we talked with experts about how important it is to guard your database and about the best ways to get back your encrypted data. Good stuff.

We now interrupt this newsletter with a "two cents alert:"

If we entered all the stories in a "Miss Pithy" contest, I think the story about the importance of a security plan would be wearing the tiara, clutching the bouquet, and shaking out tears of mascara-melting joy. Our security expert Roberta Bragg talked about how important it is, in these patch-happy times, to keep your head above the flood of fixes, and keep your eye on the bigger picture. A security plan, strategy, roadmap -- whatever you want to call it -- is so much more important than any individual patch. In other words, don't respond with "how high" whenever Microsoft says "jump" -- take control of your own system, and decide what you need -- with your security roadmap as your guide.

We decided to run these reports as our way of observing the dubious anniversary of Nimda. Sure it was nasty, and one year later it still poses a threat. But there's also a silver lining: It seems everyone is talking security these days. It's no longer an afterthought -- it's a forethought. Just like the good old days of leaving the front door unlocked and the windows open are gone, so too are the days of cavalier system security.

One final comment and request: In the last few weeks, we've spotlighted security, admin tips, Linux and certification. Now we want your ideas. Are there any hot topics you'd like to see us cover?

    >> Ask Tony Northrup: Client config for Internet Connection Sharing
Dear Tony: I have a desktop (host) and a laptop on Internet Connection Sharing. They are connected peer to peer and work fine. The laptop can see that the host is connected to the Internet but I can't start Internet from the laptop. What do you do in the client to share the Internet Connection with the host?
    >> Ask Roberta Bragg: Securing a wireless LAN
Dear Roberta: What are the options available to me for securing a wireless Local Area Network when users are accessing it with 802.11b devices?
    >> Ask Laura Hunter: Stopping spam via internal addresses
Dear Laura: An unknown intruder has been spamming our network and sending users to pornography sites. We're stumped! How is the intruder getting into my company's internal addresses and how can we prevent this?
