NEWS
Meta panel touts Web service wars, but no shots fired (SearchWebServices.com)
Though Meta Group promised fireworks this week when it brought together representatives from major Web services platform vendors, including Microsoft and Sun, they all cordially agreed that business leaders must play a major role in their companies' Web services development. They also discussed the merits of various Web services implementation strategies.

NEWS
Sun to join WS-I (CNET)
Sun's in. The company plans to unite with all the other major Web services vendors by joining the Web Services Interoperability Organization, an industry group founded by Microsoft and IBM charged with making Web services products compatible. Sun had said it would only join the group as a board member so as to be on equal footing with IBM and Microsoft, but this move paves the way for Sun to seek election to one of two newly created board seats next year.

ASK ROBERTA BRAGG
Protecting EFS recovery agent keys
Dear Roberta:
We have two domain EFS recovery agents and have exported their keys to a password-protected file on a CD that is stored in a safe. The password for the CD is stored separately and is protected by security. Do you see this as being an adequate way to ensure that files can be recovered?

THE MISSING LINK
I am woman, hear me log on and get rich

Maybe it should be called a "jillpot" instead of a "jackpot." A 36-year-old woman in the U.K. is more than $312,000 richer thanks to an Internet slot machine game. Michelle Black plunked down 100 pounds, let 'er rip and now Ms. Black is in the black big time. The payout is the largest of its kind in Britain. Black's booty beat the old record of more than $203,000, also won by a woman. Black's bookie said that nearly one-third of his Net players are women and that it's time to stop thinking of betting as a man's game.
