When it comes to securing your network, an IT administrator can be his own worst enemy. Or, as Windows technologist Mark Minasi once said, "it's that face in the mirror that you have to worry about the most."

You have to worry about the IT administrator in the next cubicle, too. If that sys admin doesn't protect the system in his or her charge, then worms could use that system to broadcast their evil twins to your systems.

The trouble is, securing a system requires constant vigilance and a dedication to doing boring, routine tasks everyday. So, you won't find any magic bullets in SearchWindowsManageability.com's many articles on protecting networks from hackers. Instead, security experts like Minasi, Scott Blake, Doug Paddock and others offer sound advice about real-world ways to protect systems.

All of these experts advise IT administrators to do regular security audits. This reality check can let you know if you've got all your bases covered. If you don't, you could end up as the subject of one of our security horror stories.

If you've already blundered, tell us the sad tale of your security disaster. Our experts will respond, offering you and our readers their insights about what happened and advice about how to avoid that situation in the future. Write to us at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

     Expert Technical Advice:

    Featured Expert: Roberta Bragg
    Independent security consultant and author
    Category: Security

Join Bragg on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. for a Halloween webcast: Trick or Treat: What has Microsoft delivered in trustworthy computing? Bragg will evaluate new security tools and updated product features coming out of Redmond, and opine about who's really responsible for maintaining a secure and reliable IT environment.
Ask Roberta a question about trustworthy computing

    Advice from our Experts
    >> Ask Roberta Bragg: Restoring lost, encrypted data
Dear Roberta: How can I prevent the loss of encrypted data? Specifically, I want to know what file or file piece I need to back up? And for that matter, how do I correctly restore the data so that I can recover it?
    >> Ask James Michael Stewart: Cram session on network security
Dear James: I am very new to administration and have inherited a network with a range of Win98 to WinXP operating systems. Can you suggest a program/book to aid me in learning everyday desktop security implementations that will make things easy and fast?
    >> Ask Tony Northrup: No Internet access through VPN
Dear Tony: I've set Microsoft's VPN Server in Windows 2000 but I am having problems with static routes. If I follow Microsoft's instructions on how to set up the routes, I can connect to the VPN server, log in and access local machines on the LAN. But I can't access the Internet. Help!

    Letters to the Editor
It's thumbs down on Microsoft's merger of the longstanding Microsoft Exchange Conference and its Tech-Ed developer show next year. At least that's what a smattering of your SearchWin2000.com peers think.
