LEAD STORY
MS memo: Linux bashing is backfiring  (CNET)
All of Microsoft's mudslinging when it comes to Linux may be damaging MS itself. A memo has surfaced in which Microsoft officials claim that all the open-source dissing isn't working and, in some cases, is backfiring. The memo, which has been posted on Opensource.org, was written in September.

Gartner: Trios to rule IT (ZDNet)
At the "Cannes Geek Festival" this week, Gartner analysts declared who will rule the kingdoms of IT. IBM, Oracle and Microsoft will rule the software and business infrastructure kingdoms while Dell, HP and IBM will rule hardware. As far as applications go, PeopleSoft, SAP and Siebel are the big three. Gartner is telling its clients to beware of consolidation and make sure they're protected in case their suppliers are eaten up.

NEWS
USENIX attendees debate merits of Palladium (ZDNet)
Attendees at the USENIX security conference in San Francisco debate the merits of Microsoft's Palladium architecture for its Trustworthy Computing initiative. Microsoft positions it as technology that would enhance privacy, stymie piracy and increase a corporation's control over its computers. Users, however, say Palladium may block them from certain data by mechanisms that monitor software licensing, for example. Instead of keeping third parties from prying into data, it may keep intended users out, attendees said.

THE MISSING LINK
Tongues wagging over Rosetta disk

A new disk speaks to the preservation of languages from Aramaic to Zulu. The Rosetta disk aims to keep living, dead and dying tongues alive for thousands of years. But if you want to check Czech idioms or see if any Old Norse verbs take the dative case, bring a big microscope and a bigger check.
