Microsoft is throwing a birthday party to celebrate a decade of data. SQL Server, the software giant's darling database, turns the big 1-0, but customers won't trek to Seattle simply to sing "Happy Birthday," have cake and talk smack about Oracle. Microsoft plans to break some of the ice regarding Yukon -- the next SQL Server -- to the delight of DBAs dying for database dish.

Oracle stuffing core database with management, backup (CRN)
While Microsoft mushes through Yukon, Oracle is elbow greasing management and backup capabilities to its core database and, according to Larry Ellison, nixing the need for third-party products. The Oracle CEO/sailor told OracleWorld attendees (via satellite from New Zealand) that they "won't need Veritas or others because Oracle will automatically back itself up."

ASK ROBERTA BRAGG
How do I keep my ASP Web server secure?
Dear Roberta:
Our ASP Web server got hacked. It was running NT 4.0. We have rebuilt it and are about to release it back onto the DMZ (demilitarized zone). We have applied all MS patches and also used the IIS lockdown tool. Any suggestions on keeping it secure and preventing it from getting hacked and tagged again?

Gates gets colossal condom
;)
When you own the biggest firm and have the deepest pockets, you deserve the biggest... condom? The city of Hyderabad, India, giddy over Microsoft's opening its first software development center outside the U.S. there, saluted Chairman Gates with an eight-foot tall, inflated prophylactic. Why not just erect a statue or roll out a red carpet? This was Hyderabad's way of showing that it thinks the size of Bill and Melinda Gates' check matters. The couple's foundation has announced a $100 million gift to help spread AIDS awareness in India. By the way, Microsoft has donated four times that amount to spread Windows and .NET awareness in India.
