While Windows XP is a favorite topic for Microsoft's marketing division, IT pros still are grappling with Windows 2000 and looking for ideas and shortcuts to lighten their workload.

SearchWindowsManageability.com recently published a number of useful tips and how-to articles for IT pros supporting Windows 2000 that will be handy for some time.

Regular contributor Douglas Paddock wrote a two-part series on optimizing bindings for Windows 2000 that included desktop images so readers can more easily implement suggestions. In another recent article, Douglas weighed the pros and cons of delegating authority in Active Directory.

If you are thinking about Microsoft's SharePoint Portal Server, consider this advice from Rand Morimoto, president of Convergent Computing consultancy. Morimoto told an IT pro audience at a recent seminar in Oakland, Calif., that they should wait a while before replacing their Exchange servers with the SharePoint collaborative computing platform.

Speaking of supporting Windows, reader and IT pro Jeffrey Small shared his Windows-Linux integration horror story. In a subsequent article he told us why his customers are wary of switching from Windows to Linux.

Some of the most interesting stories we publish are about you and your experiences. Readers continue to send in bloopers and application/network integration stories.

We're always interested in our members' stories. Be sure to send us yours.

    Matt

    >> Out of the Loop: The code name game
Oh, those Microsoft code names. From Avalon to Whistler, from Mercury to Jupiter and from Cairo to Memphis -- the code name game is really a mind game if you think about it. Play a round with news editor Ed Parry.
    >> Microsoft's corporate IM: Necessary or knee-jerk?
AOL did it, Yahoo did it, now Microsoft has done it -- the corporate ping thing. Last week Redmond unveiled MSN Messenger Connect for Enterprises, a corporate IM tool. But wait, isn't enterprise IM Greenwich's business?
    >> MS on collision course with Sun, Novell for directory market
AD/AM -- it's not a radio station, but Microsoft hopes you'll tune in. Active Directory in Application Mode (AD/AM) is a version of Active Directory that is de-coupled from the Windows operating system, but which shares the same code base.

    Tip of the Week:
The very bottom of the home page for "Microsoft Certified Professional" magazine has long maintained a table entitled "MCP by the Numbers" that until recently was the only source for the numbers of individuals holding various Microsoft certification credentials. That all changed on Oct. 11, when Microsoft posted a new Web page entitled "Microsoft Certified Professionals Worldwide" and there are some interesting differences when compared to the MCP Magazine tallies.
