LEAD STORY
SMS 2003 delayed  (SearchWin2000.com)
Hurry up and wait some more. Microsoft plans to hold off on SMS 2003 until September. Evidently the product still needs some work, but some customers say they'll manage -- it's better to wait a little longer than to get a problematic product.

NEWS
German town says "auf wiedersehen" to Microsoft (Bloomberg News)
Some German government workers are saying "nein" to Microsoft and "willkommen" to Linux. Government offices in Schwaebisch Hall figure they will save about $100,000 per year by dumping Windows. This is all part of a deal between the German government and IBM -- Big Blue is working hard to push the penguin into the mainstream.

ASK ED TITTEL
Too old for IT?
Dear Ed:
I'm an old contract telephone engineer who can't find a job. In your opinion, can I benefit from the MCSE CD-ROM offered by WhatIs.com -- i.e., do you think I can become certified? And, if I actually become certified, do you think I could have gainful employment in the IT field even at the youthful age of 61?

THE MISSING LINK
Rock, paper, scissors champ handed $1,200

Unemployed Web site operator Pete Lovering may not be working right now, but he's hardly sitting on his hands. Lovering is the World Rock Paper Scissors Society's first international champ. You could say he won hands down, or you might elect to avoid using such an obvious pun. Lovering got the upper hand on more than 250 other hand-to-hand combatants at the Toronto competition. His winning hand helped him grab $1,200 in prize money, a video game system and a gold medal. Not bad for a job seeker who needed a handout.
