DEFRAG THE AD DATABASE ONLY WHEN NEEDED | Rick Cook

Active Directory in Windows 2000 is Microsoft's way of providing
effective control over files on the network. The heart of AD is the
Extensible Storage Engine and the associated AD database, which
becomes defragmented as items are added and deleted. While you may
think to do a Windows 2000 defragmentation following garbage
collection, such defragmentation is incomplete. Find out how and when
to defrag your AD database.

UNDERSTAND DISK PERFORMANCE NUMBERS IN WINDOWS | Rick Cook

Analyzing disk performance in Windows NT and 2000 using Microsoft's
built-in reporting tools is no easy task. Specifically, the % Disk
Time, % Disk Read Time and % Disk Write Time numbers produced by the
PhysicalDisk Object don't mean what they seem to. Find out why the
numbers don't add up in this tip.

IS DEFRAG NECESSARY TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE? | Backup & Recovery forum

Are you methodically defragging your volumes to improve performance?
SearchStorage.com user "ZiggyS" says, if you are, you may want to
consider whether you're actually achieving anything. He posted the
following in the Backup and Recovery discussion forum: "The premise
for defrag improving performance is that having a file in a single
contiguous extent reduces seeking. There is no other benefit."

Do you think volume defragging is unnecessary?
