LEAD STORY
Microsoft extends NT's life  (CNET)
Microsoft gave its NT 4.0 operating system another 12 months of support, which means IT administrators can get security patches and "hot fixes" until December 31, 2004.

NEWS
Manic Monday for SQL Server admins (SearchSecurity.com)
Ideally, most vulnerable SQL Servers should have been patched over the weekend to counteract the Slammer worm. But security experts know that just isn't the case. Patching mission-critical systems is difficult and could result in costly downtime.

NEWS
Volunteer project could oblige Microsoft to work with Linux (San Jose Mercury News)
The Mono project is breaking down the walls between Linux and Microsoft's new .NET software development platform. Mono, an open source version of the .NET framework, would help developers write software not just for Windows and gadgets, but Linux and variants of the Unix operating system.

ADMIN KNOW-IT-ALL QUIZ #18
None shall pass
At times, domain users will try to connect to a Windows 2000 server that is a member of the same domain, only to be asked for their credentials (user IDs/passwords) before they can access the server. This is most likely due to:
a. Their passwords having been changed by a hacker
b. An AD tree accessing an outdated user profile
c. Your administrator changing your user rights and privileges
d. A duplicate SPN (ServicePrincipalName) value in the AD tree
e. A European swallow

THE MISSING LINK
Firm ranks most annoying spam

The very expression "annoying spam" is redundant, but evidently some inbox flotsam is more bothersome than others. A company that produces filtering software came up with the top 10 most annoying "deleteables" of 2002. And, not surprisingly, smutty spam was king. Free passwords to sex sites topped the "least-wanted" list, followed by those vexing Viagra offers, home refinancing deals, and the "help me now, and I'll make you rich later" scam messages sent by that bogus African prince. Oh, and that stinking "amazing tiny remote control car" was on there, too. Ugh -- never has the "delete" button enjoyed such popularity.
