COPY ACLS WITH FILES | by Serdar Yegulalp

As most of us know, access control lists, or ACLs, are collections of
metadata that are attached to files, folders and objects stored using
the NTFS file system. Modify an object's ACL and you can restrict or
allow access to that object by users or groups of users. However,
ACLs don't work on any other file system than an NTFS volume -- and
when copying a file or a folder to another NTFS volume, the ACLs
don't travel with the file by default.

HYPER-CHARGE WINDOWS 2000 | by Douglas Drewry

When implementing new servers that include the latest Intel Pentium 4
Xeon processors, be sure and select the correct version of Windows
2000 to take advantage of current Intel processor technology. Since
the major server manufacturers like HP/Compaq, IBM and Dell have
integrated the new Intel chips in their mainstream hardware
offerings, you will likely see new server purchases arrive with
'hyper-threading' technology.

OFFICE UPGRADE ALLOWS ADMIN LOG ON ONLY | Ask Jerry Honeycutt

Dear Jerry:
I am upgrading some desktops from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. I have
done two so far and have run into the same problem on both. They have
MS Office 2000 installed with the latest service packs. After I
upgraded them to Win2000, I rebooted and logged on as a user. I got
the following Office error: "This application must be installed to
run. Please run setup from the location where you originally
installed the application." If I log as administrator, everything
runs fine. What has happened, and is there a quick and easy fix?

SHARE AND SHARE ALIKE | Know-IT-All Quiz #20

Test your knowledge with this week's quiz, then visit the list of
related information you'll find on the answer page.

Sometimes an admin or user will delete a folder that has an active
file share on it and ignore the warning that Windows provides when
this is done. Not only does this log an error, but under some
conditions the share itself isn't removed, and will continue to throw
an error whenever the system is restarted. The easiest way to keep
this from happening is to:

a. Remove the share from the Shared Folders section of Comp Mgmt
b. Trace the missing share via your error logs and delete it
c. Remove the share from the registry
d. Both a. and c.
e. Share your active files with the other kids
